Target facility management roles over basic maintenance
Positions requiring building automation systems, energy management, or preventive maintenance planning are more likely to qualify for H-1B sponsorship than general repair work.
Highlight technical certifications and specialized training
EPA certification, HVAC licenses, electrical training, or facility management credentials strengthen your case for specialty occupation classification beyond basic maintenance skills.
Focus on employers with complex facilities
Hospitals, universities, manufacturing plants, and data centers need specialized maintenance knowledge that supports H-1B eligibility better than standard office buildings.
Emphasize degree requirements in job descriptions
Work with employers to ensure job postings specify that an engineering, facilities management, or technical degree is required for the position.
Consider maintenance supervisor or coordinator titles
Leadership roles involving staff management, budget oversight, or system design are more likely to meet specialty occupation standards than individual contributor positions.
Document specialized knowledge and complex systems
Maintain records of advanced equipment you work with, technical training completed, and complex problem-solving that demonstrates specialized knowledge beyond general maintenance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do general maintenance workers qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most general maintenance positions don't qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship because they don't meet the specialty occupation requirement. However, roles involving facility management, building automation systems, or specialized technical knowledge can qualify when they require a relevant degree.
What degree do I need for maintenance worker visa sponsorship?
Engineering, facilities management, construction management, or related technical degrees work best. The key is that your degree must directly relate to the specialized aspects of the maintenance role, not just general repair work.
How to find General Maintenance Worker jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find General Maintenance Worker jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international workers with employers offering visa support. Focus on industries like hospitality, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and property management companies that frequently sponsor H-2B visa or EB-3 visas for maintenance positions. These employers often have ongoing needs for skilled maintenance staff.
Which maintenance roles are most likely to get sponsored?
Facility management positions, HVAC specialists, building automation technicians, and maintenance supervisors have better sponsorship prospects. Roles at hospitals, universities, or manufacturing facilities with complex systems are more likely to qualify than basic property maintenance.
Can maintenance workers get sponsored without an engineering degree?
Yes, but it's challenging. You'll need extensive specialized experience that demonstrates knowledge equivalent to a degree. Technical certifications, specialized training, and complex systems experience can help bridge the gap, though approval rates are lower.
What's the difference between maintenance worker and facilities manager for sponsorship?
Facilities managers typically qualify more easily because they oversee building operations, manage budgets, supervise staff, and require strategic planning. These management responsibilities align better with specialty occupation requirements than hands-on repair tasks.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored General Maintenance Worker jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
