Target federal contractors first
Defense and government contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC, and Leidos sponsor ISSOs at high rates. These firms have established immigration programs and regularly file H-1B petitions for cybersecurity roles requiring specialized technical knowledge.
Highlight your CISSP or equivalent certification
Certifications like CISSP, CISM, or CompTIA Security+ strengthen your H-1B specialty occupation case. They demonstrate that your role requires highly specialized knowledge, which is a core legal requirement employers must establish when sponsoring your visa.
Prioritize roles tied to a specific clearance level
ISSO positions requiring Secret or Top Secret clearances are harder to fill domestically. Employers sponsoring cleared roles are more motivated to invest in visa petitions, since qualified candidates with both security expertise and active clearances are genuinely scarce.
Frame your degree field precisely in applications
H-1B specialty occupation requires your degree to match the role. A degree in information systems, cybersecurity, or computer science maps cleanly. If your degree is in a related field, document coursework that directly supports security engineering and risk management work.
Ask about cap-exempt employers early
Universities, nonprofits, and government research institutions are exempt from the H-1B lottery. ISSO roles at these organizations can be filed any time of year with no selection risk, making them a strong strategic option if your OPT or current status has a tight deadline.
Use your OPT STEM extension strategically
If your degree is in cybersecurity, information systems, or a qualifying STEM field, you likely qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. That gives you three H-1B lottery cycles, significantly improving your odds of selection before your work authorization expires.

Is an Information Systems Security Officer role eligible for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. ISSO roles consistently qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, typically in cybersecurity, information assurance, or information systems. Employers must document that the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field, which most ISSO job descriptions clearly support. Federal contractors and large tech firms are among the most active H-1B sponsors for this role.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my H-1B as an ISSO?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, or information technology. Some also accept electrical engineering or a closely related field if coursework covered security architecture or systems. The key is that the degree must align specifically with the role, not just any technical discipline. If your degree is in a different field, substantial relevant coursework or a combination of education and experience may still support the petition.
Does having a security clearance help with visa sponsorship as an ISSO?
It makes you a significantly more attractive candidate, which indirectly improves your sponsorship prospects. Employers who need cleared ISSOs face a very limited talent pool, so they're more willing to invest in visa sponsorship to secure qualified candidates. That said, sponsoring a visa and sponsoring a clearance investigation are separate processes, and some employers won't initiate a clearance for a non-citizen without permanent resident status or citizenship eligibility requirements attached to the contract.
Are ISSO roles commonly sponsored for green cards?
Yes. ISSOs are typically sponsored through the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based green card categories, which require PERM labor certification. The process takes several years for most nationalities, but Indian-born applicants face substantially longer waits due to per-country backlogs. Employers in the defense and federal contracting space are generally experienced with this process and often begin PERM filings within one to two years of hire for strong performers.
Where can I find ISSO jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended platform for finding ISSO roles that explicitly offer visa sponsorship. General job boards mix sponsored and non-sponsored postings without filtering, which wastes significant time for international candidates. Migrate Mate curates roles where sponsorship is confirmed, so you can focus your applications on employers already open to hiring internationally rather than discovering late in the process that sponsorship isn't available.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Information Systems Security Officer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
