Target enterprise employers with large IT footprints
Companies running thousands of hardware and software assets, like banks, hospital systems, and large tech firms, maintain dedicated ITAM teams and are far more likely to sponsor visas than small businesses managing assets informally.
Emphasize your degree field, not just the job title
H-1B approval depends on proving the role requires a specific degree. Highlight your information systems, computer science, or IT management degree prominently on your resume to strengthen the specialty occupation case for your petition.
Get certified in industry-standard frameworks
Certifications like ITIL, CSAM, or Certified IT Asset Manager demonstrate specialized knowledge. These credentials signal to employers that you have technical depth beyond general IT support, which helps justify visa sponsorship investment.
Demonstrate experience with enterprise tools
Fluency in platforms like ServiceNow, Snow Software, or Flexera makes you a stronger candidate. Employers sponsoring visas want confidence you'll be productive quickly, and enterprise tool experience reduces their hiring risk considerably.
Frame your value around compliance and cost reduction
ITAM professionals who can articulate how they've reduced software licensing costs or maintained audit compliance are far easier to sponsor. Quantify your impact in dollar savings or risk mitigation terms wherever possible on your resume.
Search Migrate Mate for employers actively sponsoring ITAM roles
Not all employers list sponsorship willingness upfront. Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship was never an option before the interview stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IT Asset Management qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
IT Asset Management can qualify as a specialty occupation when the employer requires a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field such as information systems, computer science, or IT management. Generic ITAM roles where any degree suffices are harder to sponsor. Positions involving software license compliance, CMDB governance, or enterprise lifecycle management tend to meet the specialty occupation threshold more reliably.
Which visa types are most common for IT Asset Management professionals?
H-1B visa is the most common visa for ITAM roles at U.S. employers, though it requires winning the annual lottery. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and processes faster. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under the TN visa if the role aligns with a covered USMCA occupation category. L-1 visa is an option if you're transferring within a multinational company.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my visa for an IT Asset Management role?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, IT management, or a closely related technical field. A general business or management degree may not support a strong H-1B petition unless the job description emphasizes technical requirements. Some employers accept relevant certifications combined with experience, but a degree in a specific IT discipline gives your sponsorship petition the strongest foundation.
How competitive is the job market for sponsored IT Asset Management roles?
ITAM is a specialized niche within IT, which works in your favor. Demand is highest at enterprises with complex software environments, including financial services, healthcare, and large technology companies. Professionals with ITIL or CSAM certifications and hands-on experience in enterprise asset platforms face less competition for sponsored positions than generalist IT candidates. You can browse currently available sponsored ITAM positions on Migrate Mate.
Can contract or consulting IT Asset Management roles be sponsored for H-1B?
Yes, but third-party staffing arrangements face additional USCIS scrutiny. The petitioning employer must demonstrate it controls the day-to-day work, even if you're placed at a client site. Direct-hire roles with an enterprise employer are significantly easier to sponsor and less likely to face a Request for Evidence. If you're considering a consulting arrangement, confirm the staffing firm has a strong H-1B approval track record before accepting an offer.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored IT Asset Management jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
