SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Responsible to perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
- Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited program (NAACLS/ABHES) or Associate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college/university with 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semesters of biology, and twelve (12) semester hours of courses in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination and proof of eligibility to sit for an applicable certification exam (ASCP, AMT, ACHI or equivalent).
- Medical Lab Technician Certification through ASCP, AMT, ACHI or an equivalent certification agency must be obtained within 18 months of employment for all Medical Lab Technicians at the Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Department of Pathology.
- Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex. National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicant is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.
