How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Neurologist
Target academic medical centers and large hospital systems
Major medical institutions like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and university hospitals have established visa sponsorship processes and regularly hire international neurologists for clinical and research positions.
Emphasize subspecialty training and board certifications
Fellowship training in areas like interventional neurology, neurointensive care, or pediatric neurology strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case and makes you more attractive to sponsors.
Consider research-focused positions for stronger visa options
Academic neurologist roles with significant research components may qualify for EB-2 National Interest Waiver, bypassing labor certification requirements and providing a direct green card path.
Highlight medical licensing progress and USMLE scores
Employers need assurance you can obtain state medical licensure. Strong USMLE Step scores and progress toward ECFMG certification demonstrate your ability to practice in the U.S.
Network through medical conferences and professional associations
American Academy of Neurology conferences and subspecialty society meetings provide direct access to department chairs and hiring managers who understand international physician visa processes.
Apply for both clinical and clinical-research hybrid roles
Many neurology positions combine patient care with research activities. These hybrid roles often have easier visa justification and may qualify for expedited processing under certain circumstances.

Do I need USMLE completion before H-1B sponsorship as a neurologist?
No, H-1B sponsorship doesn't require completed USMLE steps, but most employers prefer candidates who've passed Step 1 and Step 2. You need USMLE completion and ECFMG certification for medical licensure, which is required to practice. Some research-focused positions may sponsor you while you complete remaining steps.
Can neurologists get O-1 visas instead of H-1B?
Yes, neurologists with significant research publications, awards, or leadership roles in medical organizations may qualify for O-1 extraordinary ability visas. O-1 has no annual cap and allows faster processing. You'll need evidence like peer-reviewed publications, editorial board positions, or international recognition in neurology.
What degree requirements apply for neurologist H-1B petitions?
You need a medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from an accredited institution, plus neurology residency completion. Foreign medical degrees must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service. Some positions may also require fellowship training in subspecialties like stroke neurology or epilepsy.
Do hospitals have higher H-1B approval rates for neurologists?
Academic medical centers and non-profit hospitals generally have strong approval rates for physician H-1B petitions because medical roles clearly meet specialty occupation requirements. For-profit hospitals may face slightly more scrutiny, but neurology positions typically have favorable approval odds due to clear degree-job connection.
Can I work as a neurologist while my green card application is pending?
Yes, if you're on H-1B status, you can continue working while your EB-2 or EB-1 green card petition is pending. Many neurologists use the National Interest Waiver pathway which allows self-petitioning without employer sponsorship for the green card, providing more flexibility than traditional labor certification.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Neurologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
