How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Office Secretary
Target executive assistant positions over general secretary roles
Executive assistants to C-suite executives are more likely to meet H-1B specialty occupation requirements due to their strategic responsibilities and decision-making authority.
Emphasize project management and analytical responsibilities
Highlight duties that require specialized knowledge: budget analysis, strategic planning support, complex scheduling coordination, and cross-departmental project management in your job description.
Consider multinational companies with international operations
Companies with global offices often need bilingual executive assistants who can coordinate across time zones and manage international business relationships effectively.
Focus on industries that value specialized administrative expertise
Legal firms, healthcare organizations, and financial services companies often require administrative professionals with industry-specific knowledge and regulatory compliance understanding.
Pursue additional certifications in office management or business
Professional certifications from organizations like IAAP demonstrate specialized knowledge and can strengthen your case for meeting specialty occupation requirements under H-1B.
Document complex software and systems expertise
Advanced proficiency in enterprise software, database management, or specialized industry platforms can help differentiate your role from basic clerical work.

Do office secretary positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most basic office secretary positions don't qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they don't meet the specialty occupation requirement. However, senior executive assistant roles with strategic responsibilities, complex project management duties, and specialized knowledge requirements can qualify when they require a bachelor's degree in a specific field.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as an office secretary?
You typically need a bachelor's degree in business administration, office management, communications, or a related field. The degree must be directly related to the specific duties of your role. Some positions may accept equivalent work experience using the three-for-one rule where three years of experience substitutes for one year of education.
Which companies are most likely to sponsor office secretaries for H-1B visas?
Large corporations, multinational companies, law firms, healthcare organizations, and financial services companies are most likely to sponsor executive assistant positions. These employers often need administrative professionals with specialized industry knowledge, international coordination skills, or complex project management capabilities that justify H-1B sponsorship.
What's the typical H-1B approval rate for administrative positions?
Administrative positions have lower H-1B approval rates than technical roles, with approval rates varying significantly based on job complexity and employer size. Executive assistant positions at large companies with clearly defined specialized duties have better approval odds than general clerical roles, but overall administrative approvals remain challenging.
Can I get an H-1B as a secretary without a business degree?
Yes, but it's more challenging. You can use the three-for-one rule where three years of relevant work experience substitutes for one year of education. Alternatively, degrees in communications, English, international studies, or other fields may qualify if the job duties directly relate to that educational background and require specialized knowledge.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Office Secretary jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
