Confirm the degree requirement is explicit
H-1B sponsorship requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning a specific bachelor's degree must be required, not just preferred. Ask the employer directly whether their job description mandates a degree in a particular field.
Target employers with a sponsorship track record
Tech platforms, media companies, and large nonprofits sponsor Partnerships Coordinator roles far more consistently than small businesses. Focusing your search on organizations with established HR infrastructure significantly improves your sponsorship approval odds.
Understand where your visa status fits the timeline
If you're on OPT, your employer can file an H-1B petition without waiting for your current status to expire. Timing the job search to allow at least 3 months before your OPT end date gives room for the petition process.
Highlight relationship management and strategic skills
Employers justify H-1B sponsorship by demonstrating the role requires specialized knowledge. Frame your experience around strategic partner development, cross-functional coordination, and business development rather than general administrative support.
Know which visa categories apply beyond H-1B
Partnerships Coordinators with documented professional achievements may qualify for O-1A consideration. Australians should also evaluate the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and processes faster, making it worth discussing with any U.S. employer.
Get the job offer before the visa conversation
Raising sponsorship before an employer has decided they want you can end the process early. Secure a strong offer first, then confirm sponsorship logistics. Employers who want you will engage seriously with the process once they're committed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Partnerships Coordinator role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. H-1B visa sponsorship requires the position to be a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as business, marketing, or communications. If the employer lists the degree as preferred rather than required, or accepts any degree field, USCIS may deny the petition. Roles at larger organizations with clearly defined degree requirements tend to get approved more consistently.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as a Partnerships Coordinator?
Most H-1B approvals for this title involve degrees in business administration, marketing, communications, or international relations. The key is that your degree field must align logically with the job duties. A degree in an unrelated field, even at the bachelor's level, can create problems during adjudication if USCIS questions the connection between your education and the role.
How competitive is visa sponsorship for Partnerships Coordinator jobs?
The H-1B lottery remains competitive across all roles, with selection rates around 25% in recent years. However, Partnerships Coordinator positions at cap-exempt employers, such as universities and certain nonprofits, skip the lottery entirely. Australian citizens can bypass the lottery altogether through the E-3 visa, which has a 10,500 annual cap that has never been filled. Browse sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate to identify which organizations are actively hiring for this role.
Can I change employers on an H-1B as a Partnerships Coordinator?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, provided you're maintaining valid H-1B status. The new employer must file a fresh I-129 petition covering your new role. If the responsibilities or degree requirements differ significantly from your original petition, the new filing will be adjudicated on its own merits.
Are there alternatives to H-1B sponsorship for Partnerships Coordinators?
Several visa categories can apply depending on your background. Australians are eligible for the E-3 visa, which is employer-sponsored, requires a specialty occupation, and renews indefinitely without a lottery. Candidates with a strong record of professional recognition may qualify for O-1A. TN visa status covers Canadians and Mexicans in certain business-related roles. Each category has different employer obligations, so it's worth identifying which applies to your situation before approaching employers.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Partnerships Coordinator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
