How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Counselor
Target community mental health centers and nonprofit organizations
Community mental health centers, rehabilitation hospitals, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations frequently sponsor H-1B visas. These employers understand the specialized training required for psychosocial rehabilitation work.
Emphasize your specialized degree and clinical training background
Your master's in counseling, psychology, or social work directly supports H-1B specialty occupation requirements. Include supervised clinical hours, internship experience, and any specialized certifications in rehabilitation counseling.
Highlight experience with evidence-based rehabilitation models and treatment approaches
Experience with psychosocial rehabilitation models, cognitive behavioral therapy, or community-based treatment programs demonstrates the specialized knowledge required for H-1B approval in this field.
Consider positions requiring bilingual skills or cultural competency
Many rehabilitation programs serve diverse populations. Bilingual abilities or cultural competency training can make you more attractive to employers who need specialized staff for underserved communities.
Look for roles involving program development or specialized populations
Positions focused on developing rehabilitation programs, working with specific populations like veterans or individuals with dual diagnoses, or implementing new treatment modalities strengthen sponsorship cases.
Apply to larger healthcare systems with established visa programs
Hospital systems, large behavioral health networks, and academic medical centers often have immigration departments and experience with H-1B sponsorship for mental health professionals.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a psychosocial rehabilitation counselor?
Most positions require a master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or rehabilitation counseling. Some roles accept a bachelor's in psychology or social work with extensive supervised clinical experience. The degree must be directly related to mental health treatment and rehabilitation services to qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements.
Do psychosocial rehabilitation counselor positions typically get approved for H-1B visas?
Yes, these positions generally qualify as specialty occupations since they require specialized knowledge in mental health treatment, rehabilitation techniques, and behavioral interventions. USCIS typically approves cases where the role involves clinical assessment, treatment planning, or specialized rehabilitation services requiring a relevant degree.
Can I get sponsorship without a state counseling license?
Many employers will sponsor you before licensure, especially if you're license-eligible with the required degree and supervised hours. Some positions are specifically for pre-licensed counselors working toward full licensure. However, having an active license or clear path to licensure strengthens your sponsorship case significantly.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor psychosocial rehabilitation counselors?
Community mental health centers, rehabilitation hospitals, nonprofit behavioral health organizations, and large healthcare systems frequently sponsor H-1B visas. Veterans Affairs facilities, university counseling centers, and substance abuse treatment programs also commonly sponsor qualified mental health professionals.
What if my degree is in a related field but not specifically counseling?
Degrees in psychology, social work, human services, or behavioral health can work if the role requires that specific educational background. You'll need to demonstrate how your degree provides the specialized knowledge required for psychosocial rehabilitation. Clinical experience and additional certifications help strengthen cases with non-traditional degree combinations.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Psychosocial Rehabilitation Counselor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
