How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Advanced Practice Provider
Emphasize your clinical specialization
Healthcare employers value specialized skills like acute care, family practice, or psychiatric mental health. Document your certification areas, clinical rotations, and specialized training to demonstrate expertise beyond general practice.
Target shortage areas for stronger cases
Rural hospitals, community health centers, and underserved areas actively recruit APPs. These positions often have stronger H-1B approval rates due to documented healthcare workforce shortages.
Prepare for degree equivalency evaluation
International nursing or medical degrees may require credential evaluation through CGFNS or similar organizations. Start this process early as it can take several months to complete.
Highlight your prescriptive authority
Many countries don't grant prescriptive authority to mid-level providers. Emphasize how your ability to diagnose, prescribe medications, and manage patient care independently adds specialized value.
Consider O-1 for exceptional clinical expertise
APPs with published research, awards, or recognition in specialized fields may qualify for O-1 visas. This path avoids H-1B lottery uncertainty and allows faster processing.
Research state licensing requirements early
Each state has different APP licensing requirements and scope of practice regulations. Understand these before accepting positions, as some states require additional examinations or training.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Advanced Practice Providers qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, APPs typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship because the role requires specialized knowledge and a master's degree or higher. Healthcare employers commonly sponsor APPs due to workforce shortages and the specialized clinical skills required for independent patient care and prescriptive authority.
What degree requirements apply for APP visa sponsorship?
APPs need a master's degree in nursing, physician assistant studies, or related healthcare field from an accredited program. International degrees require credential evaluation through organizations like CGFNS. Some specialized APP roles may accept equivalent experience, but degree requirements are typically strict in healthcare.
Are APP H-1B applications more likely to be approved?
Healthcare positions, including APPs, generally have strong approval rates due to documented workforce shortages and clear specialty occupation requirements. Positions in rural areas or underserved communities often have particularly high success rates because they address critical healthcare needs.
Can international APPs get licensed to practice in the U.S.?
Yes, but requirements vary by state. Most international APPs need to pass national certification exams (like ANCC or AANP for nurse practitioners), complete credential evaluations, and meet state-specific licensing requirements. Some states require additional clinical hours or examinations for foreign-trained providers.
Do APPs qualify for EB-2 green card sponsorship?
Yes, APPs with master's degrees typically qualify for EB-2 classification. Those working in underserved areas may be eligible for National Interest Waiver (NIW) petitions, which skip the labor certification process. APPs with exceptional research or clinical achievements might also qualify for EB-1 categories.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Advanced Practice Provider jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
