Verify your RN license transfers
Most states require foreign-trained nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN before an employer can file your visa petition. Start the licensing process early. Delays in NCLEX clearance are the most common reason sponsorship timelines slip for nursing candidates.
Target health systems, not just hospitals
Large integrated health systems, long-term care networks, and federally qualified health centers sponsor more nursing supervisors than standalone hospitals. These organizations have established immigration legal teams and process petitions routinely, which reduces delays and errors.
Confirm your degree meets specialty occupation standards
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing satisfies H-1B specialty occupation requirements for supervisory nursing roles. A two-year associate degree alone generally does not. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from NACES-member organization before applying.
Ask about cap-exempt employer options
Nonprofit hospitals and health systems affiliated with universities may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions year-round without entering the lottery. This significantly shortens the timeline compared to cap-subject employers.
Document your supervisory experience clearly
USCIS scrutinizes nursing petitions closely. Your resume and support letter should explicitly quantify supervisory responsibilities: number of staff managed, scope of clinical oversight, and budget or scheduling authority. Vague descriptions increase the risk of a Request for Evidence.

Find Nursing Supervisor JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What visa types do employers use to sponsor Nursing Supervisors?
The H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant visa for Nursing Supervisor roles, provided the position requires a BSN and the employer can demonstrate specialty occupation status. Some employers use TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nurses in qualifying roles. For permanent residency, EB-3 skilled worker petitions through PERM labor certification are the standard pathway. A smaller number of highly credentialed supervisors pursue EB-1A based on sustained national recognition in nursing.
Does a Nursing Supervisor role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Generally yes, but the employer must document that the specific position normally requires at least a BSN in nursing or a related field. Supervisory roles with administrative and clinical oversight responsibilities support specialty occupation classification more strongly than floor-level nursing positions. USCIS has issued Requests for Evidence on nursing petitions where job duties were described too broadly, so detailed duty descriptions in the support letter are critical.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take for a Nursing Supervisor?
For cap-subject employers, the timeline includes the March lottery, a petition filing window starting April 1, and an October 1 start date, meaning the earliest you can begin is roughly seven months after the lottery. Cap-exempt employers at nonprofit hospitals or university-affiliated health systems can file anytime and often get approvals within three to six months. Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days.
Where can I find Nursing Supervisor jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the best place to search. The platform filters specifically for employers willing to sponsor international candidates, so you're not sorting through hundreds of listings that don't apply to you. Health systems and nonprofit hospitals that appear consistently on the platform tend to have established immigration processes, which matters a lot when you're navigating H-1B or EB-3 sponsorship timelines.
Do I need a U.S. nursing credential evaluation to be sponsored?
Yes, if your nursing degree is from outside the United States. USCIS requires credential evaluations for foreign-educated nurses to confirm the degree is equivalent to a U.S. BSN. The evaluation must come from a recognized credential evaluation service. You'll also need CGFNS certification or a state board equivalency determination before most employers will begin the sponsorship process, and before you can sit for the NCLEX-RN.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Nursing Supervisor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
