Target healthcare systems with established visa programs
Large hospital networks like Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, and Mayo Clinic have dedicated immigration departments. They regularly sponsor international healthcare professionals and understand the H-1B specialty occupation requirements for advanced practice nurses.
Emphasize your master's degree in nursing
USCIS recognizes Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees as meeting specialty occupation requirements for H-1B visas. Your advanced education directly correlates to NP responsibilities, strengthening your petition compared to general nursing roles.
Consider underserved areas for faster green cards
Rural and medically underserved areas often qualify for National Interest Waiver (NIW) petitions. This EB-2 pathway bypasses labor certification, potentially reducing your green card timeline from years to months for qualifying locations.
Research state licensing requirements early
Each state has different NP licensing requirements and scope of practice laws. Some states require additional certification or have compact agreements. Employers need to verify you can obtain state licensure before sponsoring your visa.
Highlight specialized certifications and experience
Family NP, Acute Care NP, or Psychiatric NP certifications strengthen your case. Specialized experience in emergency medicine, ICU, or chronic disease management demonstrates the advanced knowledge that supports H-1B specialty occupation arguments.
Network through professional healthcare associations
Join American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) chapters and attend conferences. Many employers recruit internationally through professional networks, and you'll learn about hospitals actively seeking international NPs for hard-to-fill positions.

Find NP JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Nurse Practitioners qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, NPs typically qualify for H-1B visas as specialty occupations. Your Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree meets the bachelor's requirement in a specialized field. USCIS recognizes that NP roles require advanced nursing knowledge beyond what a general RN position would need, supporting the specialty occupation classification.
What degree requirements do employers verify for NP sponsorship?
Employers verify your MSN degree, nursing license from your home country, and any specialized certifications like Family NP or Acute Care NP credentials. Foreign nursing degrees typically require credential evaluation through organizations like CGFNS to confirm U.S. equivalency before visa sponsorship can proceed.
How to find NP jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find NP jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international healthcare professionals with sponsored positions. Focus on large hospital systems, healthcare networks, and medical groups that commonly sponsor H-1B and TN visas for nurse practitioners. Rural and underserved areas often have greater sponsorship opportunities due to healthcare shortages.
How do state licensing requirements affect visa sponsorship?
You must be eligible for state NP licensure where you'll work before employers can sponsor your visa. Some states require additional exams or have specific scope of practice limitations. Employers often make sponsorship conditional on successfully obtaining state licensure, so research requirements early in your job search.
Are there faster green card options for Nurse Practitioners?
Yes, NPs working in medically underserved areas may qualify for National Interest Waiver (NIW) petitions under EB-2. This bypasses labor certification requirements and can significantly reduce processing times. Rural hospitals and community health centers in shortage areas are most likely to support NIW applications.
What specializations have the highest sponsorship success rates?
Psychiatric NPs, Acute Care NPs, and Family NPs in rural areas see high sponsorship success due to critical shortages. Emergency medicine and ICU experience also strengthens applications. Specialized certifications demonstrate the advanced knowledge that supports H-1B specialty occupation requirements and makes you more attractive to sponsoring employers.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored NP jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
