Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Physicist Jobs
Highlight CAMPEP accreditation in applications
CAMPEP-accredited programs are the gold standard for medical physics education. Employers recognize this credential immediately, strengthening your specialty occupation argument for H-1B petitions and demonstrating your qualifications meet industry standards.
Target academic medical centers and cancer institutes
Major cancer centers like MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, and Memorial Sloan Kettering regularly sponsor international medical physicists. These institutions have established visa sponsorship processes and understand the specialized nature of medical physics roles.
Emphasize clinical residency completion
CAMPEP-accredited clinical residencies are highly valued by employers. Completed residency programs demonstrate hands-on clinical experience and make you eligible for board certification, significantly strengthening your sponsorship case with potential employers.
Obtain ABR or ABMP board certification early
Board certification through the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics validates your expertise. Many employers prefer or require certification, making your H-1B petition stronger and opening more sponsorship opportunities.
Network through AAPM conferences and regional chapters
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine hosts major conferences where employers recruit. Regional chapter meetings provide networking opportunities with hiring managers at hospitals and cancer centers that sponsor international candidates regularly.
Consider entry through research positions first
Research-focused roles at universities or national labs may offer easier initial sponsorship paths. These positions can lead to clinical opportunities later while establishing your presence in the U.S. medical physics community.

Find Medical Physicist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do medical physicists qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
Yes, medical physics positions typically qualify as specialty occupations because they require specialized knowledge in radiation physics, dosimetry, and clinical applications. Most roles require a master's degree in medical physics or related field, with CAMPEP accreditation strongly preferred. The highly technical nature of radiation safety and treatment planning makes these positions well-suited for H-1B classification.
What degree requirements do employers expect for visa sponsorship?
Most employers require a master's degree in medical physics, health physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related field. CAMPEP-accredited programs are strongly preferred and often required for clinical positions. A bachelor's degree in physics or engineering plus relevant graduate coursework may qualify for some research-focused roles, but clinical positions typically demand specialized medical physics education.
How important is board certification for getting sponsored?
Board certification significantly improves sponsorship prospects. Many clinical positions require ABR or ABMP certification within a specified timeframe after hiring. While not always required upfront, employers prefer candidates eligible for certification or already certified. Certification demonstrates professional competency and helps justify the specialty occupation requirement for visa petitions.
How to find Medical Physicist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Medical Physicist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on healthcare systems, cancer treatment centers, research hospitals, and medical device companies that commonly hire Medical Physicists. These employers often sponsor H-1B, O-1, or EB-2 visas for qualified candidates with specialized physics and medical expertise.
Which medical physics specialties have the best sponsorship opportunities?
Radiation oncology physics has the strongest demand and sponsorship opportunities, especially at cancer centers and large hospital systems. Diagnostic imaging physics and nuclear medicine physics also offer good prospects. Research positions in areas like proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and medical imaging innovation frequently sponsor international candidates at academic institutions.
Can medical physicists get sponsored without clinical residency experience?
Yes, but opportunities are more limited. Research positions at universities, national laboratories, and medical device companies may sponsor candidates without clinical residency. However, clinical positions at hospitals and cancer centers typically prefer or require CAMPEP-accredited residency completion. Consider research roles as stepping stones to build U.S. experience before transitioning to clinical positions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Medical Physicist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
