How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Orthotist
Target orthotic device manufacturers and major hospital systems
Large medical device companies like Ottobock and Hanger Clinic regularly sponsor international healthcare professionals. Major hospital networks also have established visa sponsorship processes for specialized roles.
Complete an accredited orthotics program before applying
CAAHEP-accredited programs are essential for licensure and visa approval. Having completed formal training strengthens your specialty occupation argument and demonstrates the role requires specialized knowledge.
Obtain state licensure in your target location
Most states require orthotist licensure. Research specific state requirements early, as some accept international credentials while others require additional examinations or supervised practice hours.
Emphasize patient care and custom device fabrication skills
Highlight experience with 3D scanning, CAD design, and direct patient assessment in applications. These technical skills combined with healthcare knowledge strengthen the specialty occupation case.
Consider prosthetics and orthotics dual certification
Dual P&O certification expands job opportunities and makes you more attractive to sponsors. Many employers prefer candidates who can work in both prosthetics and orthotics departments.
Apply to employers with existing international healthcare hiring
Research companies' H-1B filing history using DOL disclosure data. Employers who regularly sponsor physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals are more likely to sponsor orthotists.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do orthotist jobs qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, orthotist positions typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations. The role requires specialized healthcare training, usually a bachelor's degree plus completion of an accredited orthotics program. USCIS recognizes orthotics as requiring specialized knowledge in anatomy, biomechanics, and medical device fabrication.
What degree do I need for orthotist visa sponsorship?
Most orthotist positions require a bachelor's degree in a health-related field plus completion of an accredited orthotics program. Engineering, kinesiology, or biomedical engineering degrees work well. The key is completing a CAAHEP-accredited orthotics program, which is essential for both licensure and visa approval.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for orthotists?
Orthotist H-1B applications have strong approval rates because the specialty occupation requirement is well-established. Healthcare roles generally face less scrutiny than business positions. The main challenge is finding employers willing to sponsor, as many orthotics practices are smaller companies unfamiliar with visa processes.
Can I get visa sponsorship at smaller orthotics practices?
Smaller practices rarely sponsor work visas due to cost and complexity. Target larger employers like Hanger Clinic, major hospital systems, or medical device manufacturers. These organizations have HR departments experienced with immigration processes and budgets for visa sponsorship costs and legal fees.
Do I need U.S. licensure before applying for orthotist sponsorship?
Not necessarily before applying, but you'll need licensure before starting work. Some employers sponsor candidates who are license-eligible and help them complete state requirements. Research your target state's licensure process early, as some states have lengthy supervised practice requirements that could delay your start date.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Orthotist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
