How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Registered Nurse Med Surg
Target Magnet Recognition hospitals first
Magnet-designated hospitals typically have stronger international recruitment programs and dedicated visa sponsorship teams, making them more likely to sponsor qualified registered nurses than smaller facilities.
Highlight your BSN for faster approval
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing significantly strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation argument and makes employers more confident about USCIS approval for registered nurse positions.
Research state licensing requirements early
Each state has different nursing license requirements for international candidates. Start the NCLEX-RN and state licensing process before applying to jobs in that state.
Consider rural and underserved areas
Rural hospitals and facilities in underserved areas often have more urgent staffing needs and may be more willing to sponsor visas for qualified registered nurses.
Emphasize critical care experience
Med-surg experience with telemetry, post-operative care, or ICU background makes you more attractive to sponsors facing acute nursing shortages in high-acuity units.
Apply for multiple visa categories
Consider both H-1B for temporary work and EB-3 for permanent residency. Many hospitals sponsor both pathways simultaneously for registered nurses they want to retain long-term.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do registered nurses qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, registered nurses can qualify for H-1B visas if they hold a BSN or higher degree and the position requires specialized nursing knowledge. However, USCIS approval rates for RN positions vary significantly based on the specific role requirements and how well the employer documents the specialty occupation criteria.
What degree do I need for visa sponsorship as a registered nurse?
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is strongly preferred for H-1B sponsorship, though some employers may sponsor RNs with associate degrees plus significant experience. For EB-3 visas, any nursing degree plus valid RN licensure typically qualifies, but BSN holders have faster processing times.
How long does visa sponsorship take for registered nurses?
H-1B processing typically takes 4-6 months from lottery selection to approval, while EB-3 can take 1-3 years depending on your country of birth. Many hospitals file both simultaneously. State nursing license transfers can add 2-8 weeks to your timeline before you can start working.
Can international nurses work while their visa is processing?
You cannot work until your visa is approved and you receive work authorization. However, if you're already in the U.S. on F-1 status with nursing OPT, you may be able to work while your H-1B change of status is pending, depending on your specific situation.
Which hospitals are most likely to sponsor registered nurse visas?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and Magnet-designated facilities have the highest sponsorship rates for registered nurses. Rural hospitals and facilities in nursing shortage areas also frequently sponsor visas. Check the Department of Labor's LCA database to see which employers have previously sponsored nurses.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Registered Nurse Med Surg jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
