Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a QA Specialist
Frame your role as a specialty occupation
USCIS approves H-1B petitions for QA Specialists when the job requires a specific technical degree. Emphasize test automation, programming languages like Python or Java, and system architecture knowledge to distinguish the role from general support positions.
Target employers with H-1B sponsorship history
Large technology companies, healthcare systems, and financial institutions file the most QA-related H-1B petitions. Employers with established immigration programs move faster and understand the process, reducing the risk of a petition being filed incorrectly.
Highlight automation skills over manual testing
Roles focused on manual testing face more scrutiny under specialty occupation standards. If your background includes Selenium, Cypress, or CI/CD pipeline work, lead with those skills. Automation-heavy roles tie more directly to a required degree field.
Verify your degree field aligns with the job description
H-1B approval depends on your degree matching the role. Computer science, software engineering, and information systems degrees are straightforward. Degrees in unrelated fields require additional documentation showing how the coursework applies to QA engineering work.
Consider TN status if you're Canadian or Mexican
Canadian and Mexican nationals with computer science or engineering degrees can qualify for TN visa status as QA Specialists under the computer systems analyst category, without a lottery. TN processing at the border or port of entry is significantly faster than H-1B.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers efficiently
Not every company openly advertises visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters QA Specialist listings by sponsorship availability, so you spend time applying to employers who have already indicated willingness to sponsor rather than guessing from job descriptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a QA Specialist role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but the job description matters significantly. USCIS requires QA Specialist positions to qualify as specialty occupations, meaning they must normally require a bachelor's degree in a specific field like computer science or software engineering. Roles centered on test automation, SDET responsibilities, or quality engineering typically meet this standard. Manual-testing-focused roles with no programming component face higher denial risk.
What degree do I need for a sponsored QA Specialist position?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related field. Some employers accept degrees in other disciplines if your coursework included relevant technical subjects. If your degree field doesn't align directly, your employer's immigration attorney may need to document the connection with a detailed position analysis and supporting evidence.
Are QA Specialist H-1B petitions commonly approved?
Approval rates for QA and software quality roles have historically been strong when the petition is well-supported. The key risk is USCIS issuing a Request for Evidence questioning whether the position meets the specialty occupation standard. Working with an employer that uses an experienced immigration attorney and provides a detailed job description tied to a specific degree requirement significantly reduces that risk.
Can I switch employers while on an H-1B as a QA Specialist?
Yes. Under H-1B visa portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for the new petition to be approved. Your new employer needs to file before your current authorization expires.
Where can I find QA Specialist jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find QA Specialist roles with confirmed visa sponsorship. Most general job boards don't filter by sponsorship willingness, so you end up applying to positions only to find out late in the process that the employer won't sponsor. Migrate Mate shows only employers who have indicated they'll sponsor, which saves significant time during a job search.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored QA Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
