QA Test Engineer Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
QA Test Engineer roles are among the more sponsorship-friendly positions in tech. Most employers file under the H-1B visa or E-3 visa, and because the role clearly requires a degree in computer science or a related field, specialty occupation approval rates are strong. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a QA Test Engineer
Target employers with a proven H-1B filing history
Companies that have sponsored QA engineers before are far more likely to do it again. Look for employers with multiple LCA filings for test engineering or SDET roles, which signals an established sponsorship process and internal immigration counsel.
Emphasize your degree field, not just your job title
USCIS approves H-1B petitions based on specialty occupation, not job title alone. A computer science, software engineering, or information systems degree strengthens your case significantly compared to a general business or unrelated technical degree.
Highlight automation skills prominently in your resume
Employers sponsoring QA engineers almost universally want automation experience. Selenium, Cypress, pytest, or similar frameworks signal the technical depth that justifies sponsorship and distinguishes you from manual-only testers who are harder to sponsor.
Understand the LCA and what it means for your offer
Before your visa is filed, your employer submits a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing rate for your location and role level. This protects you and is a standard step, not a red flag.
Australian citizens should ask employers about the E-3 visa
The E-3 is available only to Australians and bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. QA Test Engineer roles qualify as specialty occupations under E-3, and processing typically takes two to four weeks through consular interview in Australia.
Be prepared to explain how your degree connects to QA engineering
Consular officers and USCIS adjudicators may ask how your academic background relates to quality assurance work. Prepare a clear explanation linking your coursework in software development, systems, or testing methodologies directly to your daily responsibilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a QA Test Engineer get H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, QA Test Engineer roles generally qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B visa requirements, particularly when the position involves automation, scripting, or software development lifecycle work. Employers must demonstrate the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Roles focused exclusively on manual testing with no degree requirement are harder to sponsor, so job descriptions that emphasize technical depth and a required CS or engineering degree are the strongest candidates.
What degree do I need for a sponsored QA Test Engineer role?
Most sponsored QA Test Engineer positions require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related field. USCIS assesses whether the degree is directly relevant to the duties, so a general IT or unrelated degree may face additional scrutiny. If your degree doesn't match perfectly, three years of relevant work experience can substitute for one year of formal education under standard H-1B equivalency rules.
Are QA Test Engineer roles included in the H-1B cap?
Most QA Test Engineer positions are cap-subject, meaning your employer must enter you in the H-1B lottery held each March for an October 1 start date. Cap-exempt options exist if you're hired by a qualifying nonprofit research organization or university. Australian citizens can avoid the cap entirely through the E-3 visa, which has a separate 10,500 annual allocation that has never been fully used. Browse open roles on Migrate Mate to find employers already set up to sponsor.
Do employers actually sponsor QA engineers, or is it rare?
Sponsorship is common for QA engineers at mid-size and enterprise technology companies, particularly for roles requiring test automation, performance testing, or CI/CD pipeline experience. Smaller startups may hesitate due to legal costs, but many established software companies file LCAs for test engineering roles regularly. Positions titled SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) see especially consistent sponsorship activity because the role's engineering depth makes specialty occupation approval more straightforward.
Can I switch QA Test Engineer jobs while on an H-1B?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, provided your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file before your current status expires. The new role must also qualify as a specialty occupation, which is straightforward for technical QA engineering positions with a degree requirement.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored QA Test Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
