Target specialized literacy programs over general tutoring
Focus on dyslexia centers, reading intervention programs, and special education services. These employers better justify H-1B specialty occupation requirements than general tutoring companies.
Emphasize your education degree specialization
Reading instruction, special education, or literacy studies degrees strongly support visa applications. General education degrees may face scrutiny without specialized coursework documentation.
Document specialized training and certifications
Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, or similar certifications demonstrate specialized knowledge. Include these credentials prominently in your sponsorship discussions with employers.
Explore O-1 for exceptional achievements in education
Published literacy research, innovative teaching methods, or recognition in reading instruction can support O-1 petitions for highly accomplished reading specialists.
Apply to school districts during hiring seasons
Public school districts often sponsor for specialized positions. Time applications for spring hiring cycles when reading intervention positions open for fall.

Find Reading Tutor JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do reading tutors qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
Reading tutors can qualify if they work in specialized literacy intervention roles requiring specific educational training. General tutoring may not meet specialty occupation standards, but positions requiring dyslexia intervention, special education support, or advanced reading assessment typically do qualify with proper degree alignment.
What degree requirements apply to reading tutor visa sponsorship?
Most successful cases involve education degrees with literacy specialization, special education, reading instruction, or closely related fields. General education degrees may qualify if supplemented by specialized reading instruction certifications like Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading System training that demonstrate specialized knowledge.
Which visa options work best for reading tutors?
H-1B remains the primary option for most reading tutors through school districts or specialized learning centers. TN visa applies to Canadian and Mexican citizens under the 'Teacher' category. O-1 suits reading specialists with exceptional achievements in literacy research or innovative educational methods.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for reading tutors?
Competition varies significantly by employer type. School districts and specialized dyslexia centers typically have stronger justification for specialty occupation requirements. Private tutoring companies face more scrutiny from USCIS unless they can demonstrate the specialized nature of reading intervention services.
How to find Reading Tutor jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Reading Tutor jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsored positions. Look for opportunities at international schools, language centers, educational nonprofits, and tutoring companies. These employers commonly sponsor H-1B, J-1, or O-1 visas for qualified reading specialists and literacy educators with relevant teaching credentials.
Can reading tutors change employers after getting sponsored?
Yes, but you need a new H-1B petition from each employer since tutoring positions often involve specific program methodologies. TN holders can change employers more easily with a new TN application. Maintain continuous status during transitions to avoid complications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Reading Tutor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
