Target healthcare systems and large insurers
Hospital networks, national insurance carriers, and pharmacy benefit managers sponsor Reimbursement Managers far more consistently than smaller practices. These organizations have established immigration infrastructure and process H-1B petitions routinely as part of their hiring.
Align your degree field to the role description
USCIS requires a specific degree field for H-1B specialty occupation approval. Health administration, finance, accounting, or business degrees tied directly to billing and reimbursement strengthen your petition considerably over unrelated fields.
Quantify your revenue cycle impact
Sponsoring employers need to justify the H-1B petition with a specialized role. Frame your experience around denial management rates, claims recovery outcomes, and reimbursement policy compliance to demonstrate the complexity USCIS looks for.
Raise sponsorship early in the interview process
Reimbursement Manager hiring cycles move quickly in healthcare. Confirm visa sponsorship availability before the offer stage to avoid late-process complications, particularly if your OPT or current status has a limited runway.
Understand cap-exempt employer opportunities
Nonprofit hospitals, university health systems, and federally qualified health centers are often H-1B cap-exempt. Petitions filed through these employers bypass the annual lottery, giving you a reliable path to sponsorship outside the April registration window.
Prepare documentation of specialized knowledge
USCIS scrutinizes healthcare management roles. Gather evidence showing your expertise in payer contracts, Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement rules, or coding compliance to support the specialty occupation argument in your employer's petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Reimbursement Manager role considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes, when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as health administration, finance, or accounting. USCIS evaluates the actual job duties, not just the title. Roles focused on payer contract analysis, Medicare reimbursement policy, or revenue cycle strategy are stronger candidates than generalist management positions where any business degree satisfies the requirement.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor a Reimbursement Manager on a visa?
Large hospital systems, national health insurance carriers, pharmacy benefit managers, and healthcare consulting firms sponsor this role most consistently. Nonprofit hospitals and university health systems have the added advantage of being H-1B visa cap-exempt, meaning sponsorship doesn't depend on winning the lottery. Browse open roles with sponsorship confirmed on Migrate Mate to identify which employers are actively hiring internationally.
What degree is required to qualify for an H-1B as a Reimbursement Manager?
A bachelor's degree in health information management, health administration, finance, accounting, or business administration is the most common qualifying credential. The degree field needs to align with the specific duties in the job description. A degree in an unrelated field may still qualify if combined with sufficient coursework or advanced degrees demonstrating the required specialized knowledge.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my chances of getting sponsored in this role?
If your employer is cap-subject, your petition enters the annual lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate based on recent fiscal years. However, many healthcare employers, particularly nonprofit hospitals and academic medical centers, are cap-exempt and can file year-round. If you're on OPT and miss a lottery cycle, cap-exempt employers are worth prioritizing specifically because they eliminate lottery risk.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change Reimbursement Manager jobs?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you haven't violated your status. The new employer must file their own Form I-129. You don't reenter the lottery, but the new employer must still demonstrate the role qualifies as a specialty occupation.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Reimbursement Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
