Lead with certifications that signal specialty occupation
CISSP, CISM, and SABSA are widely recognized by USCIS adjudicators reviewing security architecture petitions. Listing these prominently in your resume reinforces that the role requires specialized theoretical and practical knowledge beyond a generalist IT background.
Target employers with an established H-1B filing history
Large financial institutions, defense contractors, cloud providers, and healthcare systems regularly sponsor security architects. These employers have immigration counsel in place and understand the LCA and I-129 process, which reduces delays and administrative friction on your end.
Clarify your degree field early in interviews
Cyber security architecture qualifies as a specialty occupation when backed by a degree in computer science, information security, or a closely related field. If your degree is in a different discipline, prepare to explain how it directly applies to the specific role you're being hired for.
Understand the H-1B timeline before you accept an offer
Cap-subject H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility covers the gap. Misaligning your offer acceptance with the visa timeline is one of the most common and costly mistakes at this stage.
Ask employers about their internal immigration support
Some employers handle sponsorship through in-house legal teams while others rely on external firms. Knowing which attorneys they use and whether they cover premium processing helps you assess realistic timelines and whether you need to negotiate start dates around USCIS processing windows.
Use Migrate Mate to find roles open to sponsorship
Not every security architect posting will state sponsorship availability upfront. Migrate Mate filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers, so you're not spending time applying to roles that will reject you at the offer stage because of your work authorization status.

Find Cyber Security Architect JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does cyber security architect qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Cyber security architect consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, or a directly related field. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for this job title across financial services, healthcare, and technology sectors. Employers with clear degree requirements in the job description face fewer RFEs than those using vague qualification language.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor me as a cyber security architect?
A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, cybersecurity, or electrical engineering is the standard. Degrees in unrelated fields can still support a petition if you have substantial coursework or three years of qualifying work experience per year of missing education under USCIS's equivalency rules. A credentials evaluation from a recognized agency helps document equivalency for foreign degrees.
Which visa types are typically used to sponsor cyber security architects?
The H-1B is the most common path. Canadians and Mexicans may also qualify under the TN visa in the computer systems analyst category, though cyber security architect is not always a straightforward fit and may require documentation connecting the role to that classification. Australians with qualifying degrees can pursue the E-3. Senior architects with extraordinary ability may qualify for an O-1A.
How competitive is the H-1B lottery for cyber security architect roles?
The lottery applies to all cap-subject H-1B petitions regardless of job title, so selection is purely probabilistic. In recent fiscal years, selection rates have hovered around 25 percent. However, security architects hired by universities, nonprofit research institutions, or government contractors may be exempt from the cap entirely, which removes the lottery from the equation and allows filing year-round.
Where can I find cyber security architect jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this. It surfaces cyber security architect roles from employers who actively sponsor work visas, so you're not filtering through hundreds of listings that exclude candidates requiring authorization. Roles on Migrate Mate are categorized by visa type, which helps you identify employers already familiar with H-1B, E-3, or TN sponsorship processes before you apply.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Cyber Security Architect jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
