Target companies with H-1B filing history
Employers who have sponsored Android developers before are far more likely to do it again. Look for companies with established immigration programs rather than startups sponsoring for the first time, where internal processes are often slower and less reliable.
Lead with your degree field, not just your title
H-1B approval for Android roles hinges on the degree-to-job match. A computer science, software engineering, or information systems degree strengthens your petition considerably. Unrelated degrees require additional documentation to establish specialty occupation eligibility.
Highlight platform-specific depth in your resume
Generalist mobile experience is weaker than deep Android specialization on paper. Emphasize Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Android SDK expertise explicitly. USCIS evaluates whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree, and specificity in your background helps make that case.
Understand the H-1B lottery timing before you apply
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you are not selected, explore cap-exempt employers such as universities and nonprofits, or consider the O-1A if your portfolio includes significant open-source contributions or published technical work.
Ask about sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Some employers sponsor H-1B transfers but not green card processes. Clarify upfront whether the company supports PERM and I-140 filing, particularly if long-term U.S. residence is your goal. This distinction matters more the longer you plan to stay.
Browse Migrate Mate for roles that explicitly offer sponsorship
Many job listings omit sponsorship status entirely, which wastes time in the application process. Migrate Mate filters for roles where employers have confirmed they will sponsor, so you are only seeing positions that are actually within reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Senior Android Developer a strong H-1B candidate?
Yes. Android development is consistently classified as a specialty occupation under H-1B visa requirements because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. USCIS has a long track record of approving H-1B petitions for this title, and employers in the tech sector file for it regularly, which means immigration attorneys and corporate counsel are already familiar with the documentation needed.
What degree do I need to qualify for H-1B sponsorship as an Android Developer?
A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a closely related field is the standard requirement. Degrees in unrelated disciplines can still qualify, but your employer will need to document why the specific role requires that field of study. Some candidates without a traditional four-year degree qualify using the three-for-one equivalency rule, where three years of relevant professional experience substitutes for one year of education.
Do large tech companies or startups sponsor Android developers more reliably?
Large tech companies, including established software firms and enterprise employers, tend to have more reliable sponsorship pipelines because they maintain dedicated immigration teams and existing relationships with immigration counsel. Startups can and do sponsor, but the process is often slower and more unpredictable, especially if it is their first time filing. If sponsorship certainty matters, prioritizing companies with documented H-1B filing history reduces risk considerably.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Android Developer role without restarting the lottery?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to change employers without re-entering the lottery, as long as you are moving to a role in the same or a similar occupational classification and your new employer files a transfer petition before your current status expires. For Senior Android Developer roles, the occupational classification is typically consistent across companies, so transfers are generally straightforward. Your new employer handles the petition filing.
Where can I find Senior Android Developer jobs that explicitly offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists roles where employers have confirmed they will sponsor. Most general job boards do not filter by sponsorship status, which means a significant portion of listings you see are not actually available to visa holders. Searching through Migrate Mate removes that ambiguity, so you can focus your applications on positions that are genuinely open to candidates who need H-1B sponsorship or a visa transfer.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Senior Android Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
