Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Therapist Jobs
Target healthcare systems and hospital networks
Large hospital networks and integrated health systems sponsor therapists far more reliably than private practices. They have dedicated HR and immigration teams, established petition processes, and the legal budget to handle H-1B or O-1 filings without hesitation.
Get your state license before applying
Most employers won't begin visa sponsorship until you hold a valid state license or are close to obtaining one. Completing your licensure exam before job searching signals you're ready to work immediately and removes a major barrier for the employer.
Understand your degree equivalency early
If you earned your degree outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization before applying. A foreign master's in psychology or counseling generally qualifies, but you need documentation confirming U.S. equivalency for the H-1B petition.
Highlight your specialty to stand out
Therapists with specializations in trauma, pediatric care, occupational rehabilitation, or eating disorders are in higher demand and face less competition for sponsored roles. A clearly defined specialty makes it easier for employers to justify the sponsorship investment.
Ask about sponsorship policy directly and early
Don't wait until an offer to ask about visa sponsorship. Raise it in the first interview or even before applying. Employers who sponsor know it immediately, and you avoid wasting time on opportunities that will never convert to a work visa.
Consider contract and staffing firms with immigration support
Healthcare staffing agencies that place therapists in hospitals and clinics sometimes offer H-1B sponsorship directly. This can be a faster entry point than competing for permanent roles, and many lead to full-time positions with the host employer after placement.

Find Therapist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What visa is most commonly used to sponsor therapists in the U.S.?
The H-1B is the most common visa for therapists, particularly licensed clinical social workers, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists, since these roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Physical therapists and clinical psychologists also qualify. Australian citizens should consider the E-3 visa as an alternative, which has no lottery and processes faster.
Does my therapy role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B?
Most licensed therapy roles do qualify as specialty occupations because they require a specific degree, not just any bachelor's. Clinical social work requires an MSW, occupational therapy requires an OT-specific degree, and speech-language pathology requires a master's in communication sciences. Roles where the employer accepts any degree field are more likely to face USCIS scrutiny, so the job description and offer letter wording matter.
Can I work as a therapist in the U.S. without a U.S. degree?
Yes, but your foreign degree must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES-approved credential evaluator, and you must still meet state licensure requirements. Some states require additional supervised hours or coursework beyond your foreign degree. Starting the evaluation process early is critical, as it can take several weeks and employers will need the documentation before filing your H-1B petition.
How do I find employers who sponsor therapists?
Migrate Mate lists verified sponsorship-open roles for therapists and other allied health positions, filtering out employers who won't sponsor. Hospital systems, community mental health centers, and federally qualified health centers are the most active sponsors. Searching specifically for behavioral health employers in underserved areas can also improve your odds, as these organizations often use sponsorship to fill persistent vacancies.
Are H-1B approval rates high for therapist roles?
Approval rates for therapist H-1B petitions are generally strong when the degree field clearly matches the role. Occupational therapy and speech-language pathology have well-established specialty occupation precedent. Clinical social work and counseling roles can face more scrutiny if the employer's job description is too broadly written. Working with an immigration attorney to align the job description with USCIS specialty occupation criteria meaningfully improves approval odds.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Therapist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
