How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Child Therapist
Target school districts and hospital systems
School districts and pediatric hospital systems are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for child therapists. They file in volume each year and often have HR teams experienced with the sponsorship process, making them lower-friction employers to approach.
Get your credentials evaluated early
If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a foreign credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying. Employers and state licensing boards both require this, and delays can push back your start date by several weeks.
Pursue state licensure as soon as possible
Most child therapist roles require an LCSW, LPC, or MFT license. Employers are far more likely to sponsor candidates who are already licensed or close to licensure, since unlicensed candidates can't practice independently in most clinical settings.
Highlight your specialty to stand out
Employers sponsoring visas want to justify the investment. Specializations like trauma-focused CBT, ABA for autism, or play therapy significantly strengthen your case. Lead with your clinical specialty in applications and make it central to your resume.
Understand the H-1B cap and timing
Most child therapist roles at private employers are subject to the H-1B lottery, with registration opening in March. Nonprofit community health centers and government-run schools are cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round without lottery risk.
Ask about sponsorship directly and early
Don't wait until an offer to raise visa sponsorship. Bringing it up after the first or second interview, once there's clear mutual interest, avoids wasting time on employers who won't sponsor. Frame it as a process question, not a red flag.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do child therapist roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes. Child therapist positions qualify as specialty occupations under the H-1B because they require at minimum a master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field. USCIS has consistently approved H-1B petitions for licensed clinical roles. Employers at nonprofit community health centers and public school systems can file as cap-exempt, bypassing the annual lottery entirely.
Is a U.S. degree required, or will an international degree be accepted?
An international master's degree is generally accepted, but it must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service to confirm U.S. equivalency. Both your sponsoring employer and your state licensing board will require this evaluation. A three-year master's from countries like India or the UK is typically accepted as equivalent to a U.S. master's degree, though evaluation outcomes can vary.
How do I find employers who sponsor visas for child therapists?
Migrate Mate is the best starting point, it filters job listings specifically for roles open to visa sponsorship, so you're not wasting applications on employers who won't sponsor. Focus your search on school districts, hospital-affiliated outpatient clinics, and federally qualified health centers, which tend to have established sponsorship infrastructure and file H-1B petitions regularly.
Does state licensure affect my chances of getting sponsored?
Significantly. Employers are far more willing to invest in sponsorship for candidates who are already licensed or within a few months of licensure. An unlicensed candidate requires supervision hours before practicing independently, which adds cost and complexity on top of the visa process. If you're still accumulating supervised hours, be transparent about your timeline and target employers who have supervision structures already in place.
Can child therapists pursue an O-1 visa instead of H-1B?
The O-1A is possible but difficult to obtain for most child therapists. It requires demonstrating extraordinary ability through evidence like published research, awards, or recognized contributions to the field, a high bar for clinicians in direct practice. The H-1B or, for Australians, the E-3 visa are more realistic paths. If you hold a doctoral degree and have a strong publication record, the O-1A is worth discussing with an immigration attorney.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Child Therapist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
