How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Pulmonologist
Target academic medical centers and large hospital systems
Universities and major health systems regularly sponsor international physicians. They have established immigration processes and often need subspecialists like pulmonologists for patient care and research programs.
Emphasize fellowship training and board certification
USCIS recognizes pulmonology as a medical specialty requiring advanced training beyond residency. Board certification in pulmonary medicine strengthens your specialty occupation case for H-1B petitions significantly.
Consider J-1 waiver positions first
Many pulmonologists enter the U.S. on J-1 visas for fellowship training. J-1 waiver jobs in underserved areas can lead to green card sponsorship faster than traditional H-1B paths.
Highlight critical care and interventional skills
Pulmonologists with ICU experience or bronchoscopy skills are in higher demand. These subspecialties within pulmonology can make you more attractive to potential sponsors seeking specialized expertise.
Research state medical licensing requirements early
Medical licensing varies by state and can take months to complete. Start the licensing process before job applications since many employers require active licensure before sponsoring your visa.
Consider telehealth and consulting opportunities
Some pulmonology positions involve telemedicine or consulting work that may qualify for different visa categories. Remote patient monitoring and telehealth platforms increasingly need pulmonary specialists for specialized consultations.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a medical degree from a U.S. school to get visa sponsorship as a pulmonologist?
No, foreign medical degrees are accepted for visa sponsorship if you've completed USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, plus an ACGME-accredited residency and pulmonology fellowship. ECFMG certification is required for all foreign medical graduates. Many international pulmonologists successfully obtain H-1B and O-1 visas with proper credentials and board certification.
What visa category works best for pulmonologists seeking permanent residence?
EB-2 National Interest Waiver often works well for pulmonologists, especially those working in underserved areas or conducting research. The physician shortage in pulmonary medicine can support NIW cases. EB-1A is possible for pulmonologists with significant research achievements, publications, or leadership roles in professional organizations.
Can pulmonologists on H-1B visas work at multiple hospitals?
Yes, but each employer must file a separate H-1B petition. Many pulmonologists work at both hospitals and private practices, requiring concurrent H-1B filings. Each position needs its own Labor Condition Application showing the prevailing wage and work location. This is common in academic settings with hospital affiliations.
How does fellowship training affect visa sponsorship timing?
Fellowship training on J-1 visas typically includes a two-year home residency requirement that can delay H-1B or green card applications. However, J-1 waivers are available for pulmonologists who commit to working in underserved areas. Plan the waiver process early since it takes 6-12 months to complete before transitioning to H-1B status.
Are there specific challenges for pulmonologists getting O-1 visa approval?
O-1 approval for pulmonologists requires demonstrating extraordinary ability beyond normal clinical practice. Focus on research publications, leadership in professional societies like CHEST or ATS, grant funding, or innovative clinical programs. Teaching positions at medical schools and peer review work for medical journals help build the extraordinary ability case.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Pulmonologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
