Airline Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a airline in California?
The path depends on the specific airline role you are pursuing. For flight crew positions, you need an FAA Airman Certificate, which requires passing FAA knowledge and practical exams administered through an FAA-approved testing center. Aircraft mechanics need an FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate. Customer service, ground handling, and operations roles typically require a high school diploma and successful completion of a TSA background check before starting at a California airport.
Which companies hire airlines in California?
Employers hiring airlines in California right now include United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and ABM Industries, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's major international airports in Los Angeles and San Francisco attract both domestic legacy carriers and international airlines with substantial local hiring needs.
Which California cities have the most airline jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco have the most airline openings in California. Los Angeles leads because LAX is one of the busiest airports in the world and anchors operations for numerous domestic and international carriers, while San Francisco and San Diego support significant commercial traffic and cargo activity that drives consistent demand for flight, ground, and operations roles.
Are there remote airline jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Most airline work is inherently on-site, tied to airports, aircraft, and ground operations that require a physical presence. About 13% of airline openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are concentrated in corporate functions such as revenue management, marketing, and IT roles at airline headquarters or regional offices.
How can I get hired as a airline in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a customer service agent, ramp agent, or ticket counter role at one of California's major airports, which typically require only a high school diploma and a TSA background clearance. Large carriers operating out of LAX and SFO regularly run new-hire training programs that require no prior aviation experience. Earning an FAA ground operations certification or completing a community college aviation program at institutions like Embry-Riddle's Prescott campus or Long Beach City College gives candidates a competitive edge for moving into operations roles.
Where can I find and apply to airline jobs in California?
You can find and apply to airline jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across flight operations, ground handling, customer service, maintenance, and corporate airline roles. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
