Assistant Counsel Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a assistant counsel job in Houston?
Focus on Houston's dominant sectors: energy companies along the Energy Corridor, health systems in the Texas Medical Center area, and financial institutions Downtown. Candidates with transactional or regulatory experience in oil and gas, healthcare compliance, or commercial contracts stand out locally. Networking through the Houston Bar Association and targeting in-house legal departments at midsize and large Houston-headquartered companies gives you a real edge over applicants applying from outside the market.
Which companies hire assistant counsels in Houston?
Employers hiring assistant counsels in Houston right now include Alvarez & Marsal, Vestas, and Chevron, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's legal hiring landscape is shaped by large energy producers, integrated health systems, and publicly traded corporations that maintain substantial in-house counsel teams.
Are there remote assistant counsel jobs in Houston?
Yes, though assistant counsel roles are moderately remote-friendly since many require in-person collaboration with business units, executives, or outside counsel. About 15% of assistant counsel openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common for contract review, compliance advisory, and transactional support work at Houston-based corporations.
How can I get a assistant counsel job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is joining a large energy company or health system as a junior legal specialist or contracts analyst, roles that sit adjacent to the assistant counsel function and build the domain knowledge employers value. Houston's booming midstream and downstream energy sector regularly hires recent law graduates for entry-level in-house roles. Clerking for a Houston federal or state court judge and then lateral-moving into a corporate legal department is another well-worn local pathway.
Which industries hire the most assistant counsels in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most assistant counsels in Houston are Energy, Consulting & Professional Services, and Education, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's role as the global hub for energy production and trading, combined with one of the largest medical complexes in the world and a dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, drives unusually high in-house legal demand compared to peer cities.
