Assistant or Associate Professor of Environmental Science
Chatham University’s Falk College of Environment, Leadership, and Management (ELM), in the Pittsburgh, PA area, seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Sustainability and Environment, beginning Fall 2027. This position supports growing environmental science and sustainability programs that prepare students to engage with pressing environmental challenges as community partners. The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant. However, the rank of Associate will be considered for candidates who show a proven track record of successful grant application and awards.
We seek an environmental scientist with expertise in GIS/geospatial analysis and a broad background in the physical Earth and environmental sciences. The successful candidate will teach introductory and upper-level courses such as Global Climate Science, Dynamic Earth Systems, GIS, Environmental Geology, and/or Soil Science; develop an active research program; and contribute to university service.
The position will complement existing strengths in ecology and organismal/environmental biology by expanding capacity in geospatial and physical Earth sciences. We are particularly interested in expertise in environmental data analytics and monitoring, soil-water systems, remote sensing, or applied earth sciences. Excellence in undergraduate teaching is paramount , and candidates should be committed to accessible, engaging, hands-on instruction across levels and disciplines. Consideration at the Associate Professor level requires a proven track record of successful grant application and awards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching 18 credit hours/6 courses over 9 months and advising students
Engaging in individual and collaborative research with an active scholarly agenda
Participating in University, College, and Department events and committees as needed.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have an earned doctorate or defended dissertation in an established earth or physical science including but not limited to environmental science, climate science, geology, soil science. ABD candidates may be considered.
College-level teaching experience required.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Post-doctoral research is preferred.
Ability to teach courses in climate science, geology, and/or soil science preferred.
Experience working with spatial data and teaching GIS preferred.
