Elementary School Teacher Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania?
To become an elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania, you must earn a bachelor's degree in elementary education from a Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved program and pass the required Praxis Core Academic Skills and Praxis Subject Assessments. You then apply for an Instructional I certificate through the Pennsylvania Department of Education's TIMS online portal, submitting proof of degree, test scores, and required background clearances. After several years of satisfactory teaching, you can apply to upgrade to an Instructional II certificate.
How much do elementary school teachers make in Pennsylvania?
Elementary school teachers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $77,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $51,990 for the lowest 10% to over $99,630 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire elementary school teachers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring elementary school teachers in Pennsylvania right now include KinderCare Learning Companies, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, and Wilkes-Barre Area School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large urban districts, suburban township schools, and a substantial network of Catholic and independent private schools means hiring activity spreads well beyond the largest cities.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most elementary school teacher jobs?
The Pennsylvania cities with the most elementary school teacher openings are Luzerne County, Greensburg, and Newtown. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh anchor the list as home to the commonwealth's two largest public school districts, while Allentown's rapid population growth in the Lehigh Valley has driven sustained hiring in the Allentown School District and surrounding suburban districts in that corridor.
Are there remote elementary school teacher jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of elementary school teacher openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how fundamentally in-person the role is. The subset of remote positions that does exist tends to involve online charter school instruction, curriculum development roles, or supplemental tutoring positions affiliated with Pennsylvania's licensed cyber charter schools such as Commonwealth Charter Academy.
How can I get hired as a elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a Pennsylvania-approved student teaching placement, which most districts treat as a direct pipeline for hiring. Large urban districts including the School District of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Public Schools run residency and grow-your-own programs designed for candidates without full-time classroom experience. Applying for long-term substitute positions or paraprofessional roles within a target district is a common lateral move that builds local relationships and a classroom record. Having all three Pennsylvania clearances current and your Praxis scores on file before you apply gives you a measurable edge over candidates who haven't completed that paperwork.
Where can I find and apply to elementary school teacher jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to elementary school teacher jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the commonwealth's public districts, charter schools, and private institutions. Find roles that fit your certification level and preferred region and apply directly to the employers posting them.
