Position Summary:

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Wisconsin (CW), seeks a board certified / board eligible physician to join our expanding Division. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus. We are comprised of nationally and internationally renowned, dedicated group of faculty and staff with a strong commitment to clinical care.

Position Highlights:

• As the MCW Cancer Center AD of Survivorship and Pediatric Oncology, the selected candidate will:
• Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for cancer survivorship research, aligning with the Cancer Center's mission and goals, identifying unmet needs and opportunities for funded research;
• Build a cancer survivorship program across the lifespan;
• Coordinate research initiatives to improve the quality of life and long-term health outcomes for cancer survivors. Bring together physicians, other clinicians, community partners and basic, clinical and population scientists to develop and implement research addressing issues in both children and adults, including, but not limited to transitions in care;
• Work with clinical directors to analyze data to monitor the effectiveness of survivorship programs and identify areas for improvement;
• Mentor trainees and junior faculty in survivorship care and research;
• Participate in the leadership of the Cancer Center as a member of the MCWCC Director’s Council which advises the Cancer Center Director on strategic issues;
• Advocate for the needs of cancer survivors and their families, both within the Cancer Center and in the broader community;
• If the selected candidate is a practicing clinician, they will have the opportunity to practice in the outpatient and inpatient settings and participate in development and oversight of relevant areas of the clinical program in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Division;
• Performs other duties as assigned by Chair or Chair-Designate.

Department/Division Highlights:

The MCW Cancer Center is an integrated partnership of more than 250 cancer scientists and physicians with programs focused on 1) discovering basic biological processes that promote cancer risk, development, and progression, 2) translating promising scientific discoveries into clinical practice, and 3) facilitating research endeavors that reduce cancer risk, improve outcomes and enhance quality of life, across the cancer care continuum. The Center serves a Catchment Area (CA) that includes the easternmost 29 Wisconsin counties from the northern to southern state borders and has 3.36M residents, 58% of the state’s population of 5.79M. The CA is home to 85% of the state’s Black/African American, 74% of the Hispanic, and 74% of the state American Indian/Alaska Native populations, and 40% of the rural population, groups that face significantly higher cancer mortality. The MCW Cancer Center is the major quaternary cancer care provider for this 29-county region.

Since 2020, the MCW Cancer Center has been led by Gustavo Leone, PhD, an accomplished cancer center administrator and renowned scientist known for uncovering how aberrant transcriptional activity and cell cycle control contribute to cancer cell proliferation. He oversees an enterprise of 113 basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological research Members appointed in 22 academic departments or institutes and an administrative and research support staff with over 200 FTEs. MCWCC Members have an established history of successfully procuring extramural support for their research.

The Cancer Center has 16 multispecialty, disease-based faculty research committees termed Integrated Disease-Oriented Teams (iDOTs). iDOT membership is multidisciplinary and includes physicians and scientists across all relevant realms of expertise. Each iDOT strives to maintain a diverse clinical trial portfolio, having phase 1, 2, and 3 trials with options for as many cancer patient subpopulations as possible.

Qualifications

• Medical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent) from an accredited institution OR PhD in related field.
• Board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology specialty.
• Unrestricted State medical licensure, or eligibility to obtain license, in the state of Wisconsin.
• Rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful finalist.
• If a clinician, previous practice in pediatric oncology and/or BMT.
• Eligible for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
• Proven experience in cancer survivorship, oncology, or a related field with strong publication record and strong funding record.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience working in an NCI designated cancer center preferred.

Children’s Wisconsin and Children’s Specialty Group

Children’s Wisconsin is an independent health care system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. The hospital, with locations in Milwaukee and Northeast Wisconsin, is recognized as one of the leading pediatric health care centers in the United States. Children’s Wisconsin provides primary care, urgent care, emergency care, specialty care, mental and behavioral health services, community health services, foster and adoption services, child advocacy services and health insurance plans. Each year, the Children’s Wisconsin team has more than 6.5 million touchpoints with kids and families through medical care, advocacy, research and education. In Northeast Wisconsin, Children’s Wisconsin is expanding its services to provide increased access to outstanding pediatric subspecialty care. This includes a pediatric hospital, with a Pediatric Unit, Level III NICU and Infusion Center, which is located at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah, WI. A multispecialty pediatric ambulatory clinic with on-site laboratory and radiology services opened in Appleton, Wis. in 2023.

Children’s and its joint venture with the Medical College of Wisconsin – the Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) - are the largest providers of pediatric healthcare in the state, serving the children and families of Wisconsin with the highest level of care through their American College of Surgeons Level I Children’s Surgery Verification Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence, 72-bed Level IV NICU, Level IV Epilepsy Center, and a 72-bed PICU. In 2021-2022, CW and CSG had six specialties ranked by US News & World Report: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; gastroenterology and GI surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; and pulmonology. With over 70 specialties and 675 providers, CSG providers had 220,000 outpatient visits at 13 regional care sites, 67,000 emergency department/trauma center visits, and over 9,000 admissions.
