Athletic Trainer Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a athletic trainer in Tennessee?
To practice as an athletic trainer in Tennessee, you must obtain a license from the Tennessee Board of Athletic Trainers, which requires completing a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program and passing the Board of Certification examination. Once you hold an active BOC credential, you apply directly to the Tennessee Board for licensure. Renewal requires continuing education hours on a biennial cycle.
How much do athletic trainers make in Tennessee?
Athletic trainers in Tennessee earn a median of about $59,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $44,030 for the lowest 10% to over $75,510 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire athletic trainers in Tennessee?
Employers hiring athletic trainers in Tennessee right now include Crunch Fitness, Tru Fit Athletic Club, and YMCA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's large university systems, hospital-affiliated sports medicine networks, and manufacturing employers running occupational health programs are among the most consistent sources of full-time openings across the state.
Which Tennessee cities have the most athletic trainer jobs?
Nashville, Chattanooga, and Memphis have the most athletic trainer openings in Tennessee. Nashville drives the largest share through its major hospital systems and growing sports medicine clinics, while Knoxville's demand is shaped significantly by the University of Tennessee's athletic programs, and Memphis draws openings through its healthcare networks and urban school districts.
Are there remote athletic trainer jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. Athletic training is fundamentally a hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient and athlete contact, so fully remote positions make up a small share of available work. About 0% of athletic trainer openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to involve administrative, telehealth consultation, or occupational health coordination duties rather than direct on-site care.
How can I get hired as a athletic trainer in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a position as a graduate assistant or staff athletic trainer at a Tennessee university or high school athletic program, where new graduates are regularly hired. Tennessee university systems and hospital-based sports medicine departments affiliated with institutions like Vanderbilt University Medical Center and regional health networks run clinical rotation and new-grad pipeline programs. Completing your Tennessee licensure immediately after passing the BOC exam, and targeting secondary school or occupational health roles where competition is lower than at the collegiate level, gives candidates with limited experience a concrete advantage.
Where can I find and apply to athletic trainer jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to athletic trainer jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly.
