Medical Doctor Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical doctor in Tennessee?
To practice as a medical doctor in Tennessee, you must hold a valid license from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, which requires an accredited MD or DO degree, completion of an accredited residency, and passing scores on the USMLE or COMLEX. Applicants submit credentials directly to the Board for verification. Many Tennessee health systems also require board certification in your specialty before granting clinical privileges.
Which companies hire medical doctors in Tennessee?
Employers hiring medical doctors in Tennessee right now include TeamHealth, Fast Pace Health, and Ascension, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers drive the majority of physician hiring, particularly in Nashville and Memphis where hospital campuses and affiliated outpatient networks maintain year-round physician pipelines.
Which Tennessee cities have the most medical doctor jobs?
Memphis, Knoxville, and Nashville lead Tennessee in medical doctor openings. Nashville dominates because it is home to major health system headquarters and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while Memphis draws physician demand through its large academic and safety-net hospital network, and Knoxville reflects steady growth in regional health system expansion serving East Tennessee communities.
Are there remote medical doctor jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. About 18% of medical doctor openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, since most physician roles require direct patient care in clinical settings. The roles most likely to carry remote or hybrid components are telehealth primary care, telepsychiatry, and utilization review or case management positions that do not require hands-on examination.
How can I get hired as a medical doctor in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for physicians with limited attending experience is through a residency or fellowship already completed at a Tennessee institution, which positions you for direct hire by that system's affiliated practices. Vanderbilt University Medical Center, HCA Healthcare, and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare all recruit new attendings from their own training programs. Physicians transitioning from research or academic roles can target hospitalist positions or locum tenens contracts, which Tennessee regional hospitals use frequently to onboard physicians before permanent placement. Board eligibility and a clean Tennessee license application accelerate hiring considerably.
Where can I find and apply to medical doctor jobs in Tennessee?
