A Brief Overview
The HIM Operations Auditor Specialist ensures the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of medical records throughout the organization. This role supports quality improvement initiatives, monitors performance metrics, provides education and training, and ensures alignment with hospital policies as well as accreditation and regulatory standards. This position is responsible for monitoring the quality and productivity of Health Information Management (HIM) operations, with a strong focus on data integrity and regulatory compliance. The specialist evaluates workflows, identifies and resolves issues impacting the integrity of health records, and collaborates with teams to support enterprise-wide data accuracy.
What you will do
Audit:
- Monitor and assess the quality and quantity of work completed by HIM team members to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and consistency.
- Performs in-depth investigations of questionable data entry, corrects or provides targeted guidance as advised, and participates in data integrity or regulatory audits and other duties as assigned.
- Reviews the accuracy of changes made to patient identifiers and provides targeted guidance as appropriate.
- Audit documents scanned outside of HIM for adherence to scanning policies and guidelines.
Reporting & Analysis:
- Designs, prepares, and presents statistical, trending, and performance improvement reports to leadership or others as needed.
- Recommend areas for educational and process improvement.
- Track audit outcomes and maintain documentation for compliance and quality assurance.
Training & Education:
- Provides education and training to HIM team members and other staff as needed.
- Conduct regular reviews and updates of HIM documentation, job aids, policies, and procedures to ensure accuracy and maintain up-to-date workflows.
- Stay current with regulatory changes and updates to state and federal law that impact HIM operations.
Education Qualifications
- Associate's Degree Health Information Management or related field Required
- Bachelor's Degree Health Information Management or related field Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least four (4) years experience in HIM operations Required
- At least two (2) years experience in HIPAA privacy rules Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to lead a team for projects. (Required proficiency)
- Knowledge the revenue cycle functions. (Required proficiency)
- Familiarity with electronic health records and document management systems, preferably Epic and OnBase (Required proficiency)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Required proficiency)
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills. (Required proficiency)
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to gather, analyze and make recommendations/decisions based on data. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to convey complex or technical information in an easy-to-understand manner. (Required proficiency)

- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - American Health Information Management Association - upon hire - Required or

$81,670.00 - $104,130.00 Annually
