CPA licensure in New York is granted by the New York State Board of Public Accountancy and requires completing the Uniform CPA Examination, meeting New York's education requirements, and accumulating verified work experience. For internal or IT audit roles, certifications such as the CIA or CISA can substitute for or complement CPA credentials.
How much do audit specialists make in New York?
Audit specialists in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire audit specialists in New York?
Employers hiring audit specialists in New York right now include Bloomberg, Albany Medical Center, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, Big Four accounting firms, and large state agencies means demand is consistent across both the private and public sectors.
Which New York cities have the most audit specialist jobs?
The cities with the most audit specialist openings in New York are New York, Buffalo, and Albany. New York City leads by a wide margin given its density of financial services firms, corporate headquarters, and major accounting practices, while Albany's volume is driven largely by state government agencies and the Office of the State Comptroller, and Buffalo reflects demand from regional banks, healthcare systems, and manufacturing firms.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 26% of audit specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the analytical and documentation-heavy parts of the role translate to remote work. How can I get hired as a audit specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a staff auditor or audit associate role at a Big Four or regional accounting firm, which typically hire new graduates directly from accounting programs. Large New York employers like KPMG, PwC, and Deloitte run structured new-graduate programs that provide supervised audit experience and CPA exam support. State agencies such as the New York State Office of the State Comptroller also hire entry-level auditors without prior experience. Earning the CPA Exam's first sections or completing an accounting internship gives candidates a clear edge.
