Back End Developer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a back end developer job in New York?
The strongest path into New York's back end market is targeting the sectors that hire most: financial services firms in Lower Manhattan, media and advertising tech companies in Midtown, and enterprise software shops in the Flatiron and Hudson Yards corridors. Candidates who demonstrate experience with high-throughput APIs, cloud infrastructure, and distributed systems stand out here, where scale and reliability are non-negotiable for most employers.
Which companies hire back end developers in New York?
Employers hiring back end developers in New York right now include Intone Networks, BNY, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's hiring pool is unusually broad, pulling from large financial institutions and media conglomerates alongside a dense concentration of growth-stage startups and digital agencies.
Are there remote back end developer jobs in New York?
Yes, back end development is well-suited to remote and hybrid arrangements since the work centers on code, systems design, and asynchronous collaboration rather than on-site presence. About 70% of back end developer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the highest remote share found in product-focused startups and enterprise SaaS companies. On-site requirements are more common at financial services firms and teams managing sensitive infrastructure.
How can I get a back end developer job in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in New York is a junior or associate backend role at a growth-stage startup, where teams are smaller and early-career engineers take on broader responsibilities faster than at large corporations. New York's dense tech ecosystem in neighborhoods like Flatiron, DUMBO, and Hudson Yards means a high volume of these openings. Building a portfolio of deployed projects, contributing to open-source work, and targeting companies with structured engineering rotations or apprenticeship programs sharpens your competitiveness locally.
Which industries hire the most back end developers in New York?
Most back end developer openings in New York sit in Technology & Software, Investment & Asset Management, and Agriculture & Farming, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's outsized financial services sector and its concentration of media, advertising technology, and e-commerce companies create sustained, high-volume demand for engineers who can build and maintain the systems those industries run on.
