Back-End Engineer Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a back-end engineer in Minnesota?
Back-end engineering has no state-issued license in Minnesota, so the path centers on education and demonstrated skills. Most Minnesota employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information systems, though some hire candidates with associate degrees or coding bootcamp credentials paired with a strong portfolio. Large Minnesota employers such as Target, UnitedHealth Group, and U.S. Bank recruit through campus programs at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State universities for new graduates.
Which companies hire back-end engineers in Minnesota?
Companies currently hiring back-end engineers in Minnesota include 3M, In Tandem, and HealthPartners, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Minnesota's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters in retail, health insurance, and financial services means back-end engineering roles here frequently sit within large, established engineering organizations rather than early-stage startups.
Which Minnesota cities have the most back-end engineer jobs?
Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Maplewood account for the largest share of back-end engineer openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro drives the majority of demand, anchored by the corporate headquarters of Target, UnitedHealth Group, Best Buy, and U.S. Bank, while Rochester's market is shaped almost entirely by Mayo Clinic's substantial technology and digital health engineering operations.
Are there remote back-end engineer jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 83% of back-end engineer openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how fully the role can be performed without a physical presence. The most remote-friendly segments are API development, cloud infrastructure, and platform engineering roles, while embedded systems and on-site data center work tend to require in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a back-end engineer in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or new-graduate software engineering role at a large Minnesota employer. Target's Technology Leadership Program and UnitedHealth Group's Optum internship-to-hire pipeline regularly bring in candidates without professional experience. Building a portfolio of personal or open-source projects in Java, Python, or Node.js gives candidates a concrete edge. Adjacent roles such as QA engineer, data analyst, or IT support at Minnesota companies also serve as common lateral entry points into back-end teams.
Where can I find and apply to back-end engineer jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to back-end engineer jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current Minnesota openings across industries and experience levels. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
