The standard path is a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering from a Minnesota institution such as the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State, or a private college, followed by building a portfolio of shipped applications. Employers also value coding bootcamp graduates who demonstrate strong project work, and many roles accept candidates who combine self-taught skills with an associate degree and proven app releases.

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro drives the majority of demand, anchored by corporate headquarters in retail, healthcare, and financial services, while Rochester benefits from the technology operations tied to Mayo Clinic and its expanding health tech ecosystem.
