Entry Level Backend Software Developer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level backend software developer job?
Build a portfolio of real projects that demonstrate server-side fundamentals: REST API design, database queries, authentication, and basic deployment. Employers at this level prioritize candidates who can show working code on GitHub over those who list only coursework. Internship experience, open-source contributions, or a capstone project from a bootcamp all strengthen an application for a first backend role.
Which companies hire entry level backend software developers?
Companies hiring entry level backend software developers right now include Rippling, CVS Health, and TikTok, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The hiring mix at this level typically includes fast-growing startups building out engineering teams, established tech companies with structured new grad programs, and mid-size product companies looking for junior contributors who can grow with the role.
Are there remote entry level backend software developer jobs?
Yes, though the share is smaller than at senior levels. About 32% of entry level backend software developer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, so opportunities exist for candidates who need flexibility. Many employers at this stage still prefer on-site or hybrid arrangements so new developers can get closer mentorship and team support during their first months on the job.
Are these new grad backend software developer jobs?
Yes. The listings here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior backend software developer roles alongside other entry level postings. A new grad-friendly posting typically welcomes candidates with zero to two years of professional experience and treats internships, personal projects, or a strong portfolio as equivalent to paid work history. If a listing does not require prior employment, it qualifies as a new grad opportunity.
Which industries hire the most entry level backend software developers?
Entry Level backend software developer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Banking & Financial Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive the bulk of junior hiring because they run product and platform teams that rely on backend infrastructure and need early-career engineers who can contribute to API development, data pipelines, and internal tooling as they build experience.
