Barista Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a barista in New York?
The most direct path is completing a New York City Food Protection Course and obtaining a Food Protection Certificate, which many New York coffee shops and hospitality employers require before your first shift. No statewide barista license exists, so most employers focus on hands-on espresso skills and customer service experience. Entry-level candidates often start at high-volume chain locations or smaller specialty shops that provide on-the-job training from day one.
How much do baristas make in New York?
Baristas in New York earn a median of about $35,250 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $32,240 for the lowest 10% to over $44,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire baristas in New York?
Employers hiring baristas in New York right now include Arista Networks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense mix of independent specialty cafes, hotel food and beverage programs, and large chain operations means openings turn over frequently across all five boroughs.
Which New York cities have the most barista jobs?
New York and Albany have the most barista openings in New York, reflecting where foot traffic and hospitality demand are highest. New York City dominates because of its sheer density of coffee shops, hotel lobbies, and corporate office buildings, while Brooklyn's independent cafe scene and smaller Hudson Valley markets contribute a steady share of specialty-focused postings.
Are there remote barista jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Barista work is fundamentally hands-on and on-site, so remote openings are an exception rather than a pattern. About 0% of barista openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those listings typically involve coffee education, wholesale account management, or brand ambassador roles rather than traditional bar service.
How can I get hired as a barista in New York with little or no experience?
Applying to high-volume chain locations in New York City is the most realistic starting point, since operators like Starbucks and Gregorys Coffee run structured onboarding for candidates with no prior cafe background. Completing the New York City Food Protection Course before you apply gives your application a concrete edge. Candidates who have worked in adjacent roles like food runner, cashier, or counter service at delis or hotel dining rooms are well-positioned to make a lateral move into a barista role.
Where can I find and apply to barista jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to barista jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Brooklyn, and the broader state. Search the listings, find the roles that fit your experience and schedule, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
