CAD Designer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cad designer in New York?
Most cad designer roles in New York require an associate or bachelor's degree in drafting technology, engineering technology, architecture, or a related field. New York does not issue a state-specific license for cad designers, but employers in the city and state strongly favor candidates with demonstrated software proficiency and a portfolio of completed drawings. Earning credentials such as an Autodesk Certified Professional designation signals competency to New York employers and helps candidates stand out in a competitive market.
How much do CAD designers make in New York?
CAD designers in New York earn a median of about $76,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $51,990 for the lowest 10% to over $109,530 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cad designers in New York?
Employers hiring cad designers in New York right now include GHD, LaBella Associates, and Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C., based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of architecture, engineering, and infrastructure firms means openings appear across a wide range of project types, from commercial high-rise construction in New York City to transportation and utility projects upstate.
Which New York cities have the most cad designer jobs?
The cities with the most cad designer openings in New York are New York, Syracuse, and Buffalo. New York City dominates due to the density of architecture, engineering, and construction firms headquartered or operating there, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand from manufacturing operations, state government infrastructure projects, and regional engineering consultancies that anchor those markets.
Are there remote cad designer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields, since cad work often requires coordination with on-site teams and access to project-specific file environments. About 29% of cad designer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote arrangements most common in commercial architecture and product design roles where deliverables are digital and client interaction is limited.
How can I get hired as a cad designer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to junior drafter or drafting technician roles at architecture and engineering firms, which are the most common entry-level titles posted by New York employers. Large firms including engineering consultancies and construction companies in the New York City metro regularly bring on recent graduates from programs at CUNY, SUNY Alfred, or SUNY Delhi. Building a portfolio of sample drawings and earning an Autodesk certification before applying gives candidates a clear edge over others without direct work history.
