Tips for Your CAD Designer Job Search
List every CAD platform you know
Hiring managers scan for software names first. List AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, CATIA, and any others you've used in a dedicated skills section, and note your proficiency level for each so recruiters don't have to guess.
Include file types in your portfolio
Upload DWG, DXF, or STEP files alongside screenshots when a job listing asks for a portfolio. Employers in manufacturing and aerospace often want to open the source file, not just view a rendered image, to assess your actual drafting approach.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists cad designer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Match your resume to the drawing discipline
Architectural, mechanical, and electrical CAD are evaluated separately by hiring managers. Tailor your resume to emphasize the discipline each employer works in, swapping out project examples and terminology so your experience reads as directly relevant.
Prepare to walk through a drawing live
Many cad designer interviews include a technical screen where you open a file and explain your layer structure, tolerance choices, or revision history. Practice narrating your design decisions out loud so the explanation feels natural under pressure.
Negotiate scope before accepting an offer
Ask whether the role involves original design work, redlining existing drawings, or pure drafting from engineer markups. The day-to-day varies significantly between shops, and clarifying scope before you accept prevents a mismatch in the first 90 days.
CAD Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most cad designers?
The companies hiring the most cad designers right now include Kiewit, EFCO, and Kiewit Corporation, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in manufacturing, defense contracting, and civil engineering firms.
How many cad designer jobs are remote?
About 19% of cad designer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though the share varies sharply by discipline. Architectural and BIM-focused roles tend to offer more remote flexibility, while mechanical and manufacturing CAD positions more often require on-site access to physical prototypes, shop floors, or proprietary PLM systems.
How do you become a cad designer?
Start by completing an associate degree or certificate program in drafting technology, CAD, or a related engineering field, where you'll build foundational skills in 2D and 3D modeling. Gain hands-on software experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit through coursework or self-study. Build a portfolio of drawings that shows your ability to apply tolerancing standards and produce industry-ready documentation. Entry roles such as CAD drafter or junior designer are the typical starting point before advancing to a full designer title.
Can you get hired as a cad designer without experience?
Yes, entry-level cad designer roles exist specifically for candidates who can demonstrate software proficiency and drafting fundamentals without a long work history. A strong portfolio of academic or personal projects, particularly ones that show you can apply GD&T or produce construction documents to industry standards, carries more weight than years of experience at this level. Internships and co-op programs in manufacturing, architecture, or engineering firms are the fastest way to close the experience gap.
What does the cad designer interview process look like?
Most cad designer interviews start with a phone or video screen focused on your software background and the types of drawings you've produced. A technical assessment follows, often asking you to complete a drafting task or walk through an existing file to explain your layer structure, annotation choices, and revision process. Final rounds typically include a conversation with the engineering or design team lead about project workflows, file management practices, and how you handle drawing change requests.
Where can I find and apply to cad designer jobs?
You can find and apply to cad designer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your discipline and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
