Tips for Your Graphic Artist Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to each application
Graphic artist hiring managers look at your portfolio before your resume. Swap in work samples that match the industry you're applying to, package design for CPG roles, editorial layouts for publishing, and brand systems for agency jobs.
List software versions on your resume
Many graphic artist postings screen for specific Adobe Creative Cloud versions or motion tools like After Effects. Name the exact applications and versions you use fluently so applicant tracking systems don't filter you out before a human reads your file.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists graphic artist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by specialty to narrow your search
Graphic artist is a broad title. Search specifically for the sub-discipline you do best, such as brand designer, packaging artist, or digital illustrator, so you're competing against candidates with matching backgrounds rather than a general pool.
Prepare a process walkthrough for interviews
Interviewers for graphic artist roles consistently ask you to walk through one project from brief to final file. Prepare a two-minute explanation of your creative decisions, feedback rounds, and how you handled conflicting direction from stakeholders.
Negotiate around the full offer, not just base pay
Software license reimbursement, hardware stipends, and continuing education budgets are common at studios and in-house teams. Ask about these before accepting, since they directly affect your out-of-pocket costs as a working graphic artist.
Graphic Artist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most graphic artists?
The companies hiring the most graphic artists right now include CVS Health, Fanatics, and Gap, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Minnesota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in advertising agencies, retail brands, and media companies with ongoing content production needs.
How many graphic artist jobs are remote?
About 3% of graphic artist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible creative roles in the job market. Digital illustration, brand identity, and social media design work tends to be the most remote-friendly, while print production and packaging roles more often require on-site access to proofing equipment.
How do you become a graphic artist?
Most graphic artists start by completing a degree or certificate program in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field, where they build foundational skills in typography, layout, and color theory. From there, building a focused portfolio of real or spec projects is the most direct path to getting hired. Many entry-level roles also accept candidates who are self-taught but can demonstrate strong work through their portfolio.
Can you get hired as a graphic artist with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level graphic artist roles exist specifically for candidates with limited professional history, provided you have a solid portfolio. Internships, freelance projects, volunteer work for nonprofits, and spec redesigns of real brands all count as portfolio material. Focus your applications on smaller studios, startups, and in-house teams at regional companies, where hiring managers weigh creative potential more heavily than years on a resume.
What does the graphic artist interview process look like?
Most graphic artist interviews include an initial recruiter or hiring manager screen followed by a portfolio review meeting where you walk through two or three projects in detail. Some employers add a paid or unpaid design exercise to assess how you handle a real brief under time constraints. Final rounds typically involve meeting the creative director or team leads and discussing your process, software workflow, and how you respond to feedback.
Where can I find and apply to graphic artist jobs?
You can find and apply to graphic artist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialization and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits. No separate steps are required between finding a role and submitting your application.
