INTRODUCTION
Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios, and beyond.
The Challenge
Our products are used by professionals with a lot on the line, operating in rugged environments where every second counts. Their mission is clear: find the missing person, get the lights back on, keep the roads open, and keep the good guys safe. Our mandate is to solve one of the most complex problems of our time: how to build autonomous flying robots that help them get the job done, no matter what. If reading that excites you, we want to talk to you. Skydio isn’t just building drones; we are defining the future of autonomous robotics. To win, our products must be more than just capable, they must be undeniably reliable.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for a UX Product Design Lead who understands that trust isn't a buzzword; it's built through absolute system transparency, pragmatic workflows, and giving the operator a clear handle to grab when things get chaotic. You will help us invent the interfaces of the future. You will not be designing generic dashboards. You will be designing the critical trust-bridge between human operators and advanced AI hardware, translating extreme technological complexity into intuitive, reliable, and beautiful experiences.
About The Role
As a Design Lead, you are a trailblazer. You thrive on solving problems that have never been solved before. You are equal parts strategic storyteller and hands-on craftsperson. You don't just wait for product requirements; you help define the vision, use narrative to align Engineering and Product, and execute with an incredibly high bar for detail. You will work directly with Design Leadership, Product Managers, and Engineers to map out Critical User Journeys (CUJs) and build cross-platform experiences (Web, Mobile, Ground Control Stations) that our customers implicitly trust.
How You'll Make An Impact
- Design for Trust: Lead the UX strategy and execution for our core platforms (including remote operations). You will build interfaces for autonomous flying robots that make the operator trust the job will get done, ensuring every interaction reinforces confidence, reliability, and system transparency.
- Solve Unsolved Problems: Tackle complex challenges where there is no existing playbook. You will think pragmatically and creatively to design interfaces for remote hardware sensing, 3D spatial awareness, and AI-driven missions.
- Drive the Narrative: Use exceptional storytelling to communicate user needs, frame complex problems, and align Engineering, Product Management, and Executive leadership around a unified, grounded design vision.
- Elevate the Craft: Bring an uncompromising attention to detail and craftsmanship to the team. You will build high-fidelity prototypes to test assumptions quickly, leveraging AI tools as a seamless part of your daily process to move faster and explore wider.
- Get in the Field: Go on-site with our customers to deeply understand their chaotic, high-stress environments. Bring that "ground truth" back to the studio so it informs every pixel.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- First-Principles Problem Solver: You are an out-of-the-box thinker who loves operating in ambiguous spaces where no existing design patterns exist.
- Uncompromising Craftsmanship: A portfolio that clearly demonstrates an exceptionally high bar for visual design, complex systems architecture, and attention to detail.
- Strategic Leadership: You have a proven track record of driving design strategy at a senior/lead level, actively shaping product roadmaps rather than just taking orders.
- Fluency in Complexity: Demonstrated experience shipping products in highly technical disciplines. We want to see portfolios featuring: Robotics Controls, Avionics, Geospatial/Mapping, Heavy Data/Fleet Management, or Remote Hardware Sensing.
- Prototyping Chops ("You Build to Think"): You can quickly mock up interactive prototypes to prove out concepts before Engineering writes a line of production code. You also actively integrate AI tools into your daily workflow to increase velocity and explore wider.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Deep understanding of Android-based HIG and Mobile Design Patterns for physical hardware controllers.
- Front-end coding ability (HTML/CSS/Javascript) to help bridge the gap with engineering.
- Obtaining FAA Part 107 certification within the first 60 days of employment is strongly encouraged for all Skydio employees and required for certain positions.

Tips for Your Product Design Lead Job Search
Tailor your portfolio for leadership
Show process, not just outcomes. Product design lead roles require evidence you've set design direction, mentored others, and aligned stakeholders. Include a case study where your decisions shaped how a team worked, not just what shipped.
Highlight cross-functional influence explicitly
Hiring managers for this level want proof you've partnered with product and engineering at the decision-making layer. Name the PMs and engineers you collaborated with and what changed because of your design perspective, not just your deliverables.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists product design lead openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by design system ownership signals
Job posts mentioning Figma, design tokens, or component libraries often expect you to own or scale a design system. If that's your strength, target those listings first and demonstrate system-level thinking early in your cover materials.
Prepare a design critique walkthrough
Most product design lead interviews include a live critique or portfolio presentation. Practice narrating your trade-offs out loud, not just your final decisions. Panels want to hear how you think, not just see what you made.
Negotiate scope alongside compensation
At the lead level, the size of the team you manage and the products you own often matter more long-term than base pay. Before accepting an offer, clarify headcount, reporting structure, and whether you have a seat in product strategy conversations.
Product Design Lead Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most product design leads?
The companies hiring the most product design leads right now include Rippling, NIKE, and Circle, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Technology platforms and fintech companies consistently account for a large portion of lead-level design roles.
How many product design lead jobs are remote?
About 31% of product design lead openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the collaboration-heavy nature of design leadership. Roles focused on individual contributor design work or systems maintenance tend to be more remote-friendly than those requiring direct in-person workshop facilitation or executive stakeholder alignment.
How do you become a product design lead?
You become a product design lead by first building deep craft skills as a senior product designer, then taking on informal leadership by mentoring junior designers, running design critiques, and owning end-to-end product areas. Document those contributions clearly in your portfolio and resume. Employers promote or hire at this level when they see evidence of design direction-setting and cross-functional influence, not just strong individual work.
Can you get a product design lead role without direct management experience?
Yes, some product design lead roles are individual contributor positions that focus on strategic design ownership rather than people management. To compete without direct reports on your resume, emphasize cross-functional leadership: projects where you set the design vision, aligned stakeholders across product and engineering, or mentored other designers informally. Many companies distinguish between a design lead who manages a team and one who leads product direction, so read each job description carefully before applying.
What does the product design lead interview process look like?
A product design lead interview typically moves through a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation focused on your leadership style and process, a portfolio presentation where you walk through one or two case studies in depth, and a cross-functional panel with product managers and engineers. Some companies include a design challenge or critique exercise. The panel is evaluating how you communicate trade-offs and collaborate with non-designers, not just the quality of your visual work.
Where can I find and apply to product design lead jobs?
You can find and apply to product design lead jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing. New openings are added regularly, so checking back frequently gives you the best chance of catching roles early in the hiring cycle.
