Tips for Your Cardiovascular Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your CV for each subspecialty
Highlight your case volume in the procedures each position emphasizes, whether that's TAVR, robotic mitral repair, or open aortic surgery. Listing raw numbers of cases performed is far more persuasive than a generic summary of surgical experience.
Verify board certification requirements early
Many hospital credentialing committees require active board certification through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery before you can apply for privileges. Confirm your certification status and expiration date before submitting applications so no offer gets delayed.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists cardiovascular surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by program volume and structure
A high-volume academic program and a community hospital with a single-surgeon service demand very different skill sets and schedules. Identify which environment fits your practice style before targeting openings, and let that filter your shortlist from the start.
Prepare a structured operative outcomes summary
Credentialing committees and department chairs routinely request your mortality and complication rates for core procedures. Compile a clean one-page outcomes summary from your institutional data before interviews so you can share it on request without scrambling.
Negotiate call structure and support alongside compensation
Call frequency, APP support, perfusionist availability, and access to hybrid OR suites directly affect your quality of life and what you can safely offer patients. Ask specific questions about these during the offer stage, not after you have signed.
Cardiovascular Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most cardiovascular surgeons?
The companies hiring the most cardiovascular surgeons right now include Ascension, Benefis Health System, and Houston Methodist, with the largest share of openings in Montana, Texas, and Wisconsin, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large academic health systems and integrated regional hospital networks consistently represent the highest share of active postings.
How many cardiovascular surgeon jobs are remote?
About 0% of cardiovascular surgeon openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the inherently hands-on nature of operative surgical practice. The sub-areas most compatible with remote or telehealth work include post-operative follow-up, preoperative consultation, and second-opinion case review for complex valve or aortic disease.
How do you become a cardiovascular surgeon?
You complete a four-year medical degree, followed by a general surgery residency, and then a two-to-three-year accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. After fellowship, you pursue board certification through the American Board of Thoracic Surgery by passing written and oral examinations. Most surgeons then enter practice under a proctored credentialing period at their hiring institution before gaining full independent privileges.
Can you get hired as a cardiovascular surgeon without prior attending experience?
Yes, many programs hire directly out of fellowship for entry-level attending roles, particularly at high-volume academic centers that have established mentorship and proctoring structures. Your fellowship case log, operative outcomes data, and letters from your training program directors carry more weight than prior attending tenure. Targeting institutions with structured new-surgeon onboarding significantly improves your chances of a successful first placement.
What does the cardiovascular surgeon interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screening with a physician recruiter or department administrator, followed by an on-site visit that includes meetings with the division chief, cardiac surgery partners, anesthesiology leadership, and sometimes hospital administration. You may present a case or outcomes summary, tour the OR and hybrid suite, and discuss call structure and case mix. A credentialing review and reference checks follow any verbal offer before a formal contract is issued.
Where can I find and apply to cardiovascular surgeon jobs?
You can find and apply to cardiovascular surgeon jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your subspecialty, preferred setting, and geographic preference, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
