Career Counselor Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a career counselor in Illinois?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 school counseling roles in Illinois, you must hold a Professional Educator License with a school counseling endorsement, issued by the Illinois State Board of Education, which requires a master's degree and supervised clinical hours. For postsecondary, workforce, or private-sector career counseling positions, Illinois does not mandate a separate state license, but a master's degree in counseling, student affairs, or human services is the standard hiring requirement.
Which companies hire career counselors in Illinois?
Companies currently hiring career counselors in Illinois include State of Illinois, InHome Therapy, and Central States SER, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Illinois's large community college network, hospital systems, and state workforce agencies are among the most consistent sources of career counselor openings across the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most career counselor jobs?
The Illinois cities with the most career counselor openings are Chicago, Aurora, and Northbrook. Chicago dominates the count because of its density of universities, community colleges, and corporate headquarters, while mid-sized cities like Rockford and Springfield generate steady openings through regional workforce boards, state agencies, and community college campuses anchored in those metro areas.
Are there remote career counselor jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many people expect for a counseling role. About 50% of career counselor openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how readily virtual advising sessions have replaced in-person appointments at many colleges and workforce programs. The roles most likely to be fully remote are postsecondary academic advising and online-program career services positions, while K-12 and in-person workforce center roles remain largely on-site.
How can I get hired as a career counselor in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a graduate assistantship or practicum placement, which many Illinois universities build into their counseling master's programs and which often converts to a full hire. The City Colleges of Chicago and Heartland Community College regularly bring on career services associates and advising assistants who work alongside credentialed counselors. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as HR coordinator, academic advisor, or social services case manager can move laterally, especially with the Illinois school counseling endorsement in progress or a National Certified Counselor credential as a differentiator.
Where can I find and apply to career counselor jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to career counselor jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, setting preference, and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
