Certified Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania?
You must register with the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy before working as a pharmacy technician in the state. Registration requires completing a board-approved training program or an equivalent combination of education and on-the-job training, followed by passing a national certification exam such as the PTCB or ExCPT. Most Pennsylvania employers expect candidates to hold or be actively pursuing national certification alongside their state registration.
Which companies hire certified pharmacy technicians in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring certified pharmacy technicians in Pennsylvania right now include Walmart, Walgreens, and The GIANT Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's large integrated health systems, retail pharmacy chains, and specialty pharmacy operators maintain some of the most consistent hiring volumes for this role in the region.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most certified pharmacy technician jobs?
York, Philadelphia, and Allentown have the most certified pharmacy technician openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia drives the highest volume through its concentration of major health systems, academic medical centers, and retail pharmacy corridors, while Pittsburgh's anchor institutions like UPMC and Highmark Health generate steady demand, and Allentown benefits from regional hospital growth and a dense suburban retail pharmacy presence.
Are there remote certified pharmacy technician jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of certified pharmacy technician openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on, dispensing-focused nature of most pharmacy technician work. The roles most likely to have a remote or hybrid component are specialty pharmacy patient care coordination, prior authorization support, and prescription data entry positions that do not require direct medication handling.
How can I get hired as a certified pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to paid pharmacy technician trainee or apprenticeship programs at large Pennsylvania retail and health-system employers, which hire candidates without prior experience and provide on-the-job training toward state registration and national certification. UPMC Pharmacy Services and Jefferson Health both run structured pharmacy technician onboarding tracks for new entrants. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as medical assistant, pharmacy clerk, or hospital unit secretary have a strong foothold, and completing a Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy-approved technician training program before applying gives candidates a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to certified pharmacy technician jobs in Pennsylvania?
