Certified Public Accountant Jobs in Vermont: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified public accountant in Vermont?
To become a licensed CPA in Vermont, you must pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and meet the education and experience requirements set by the Vermont Board of Public Accountancy, which oversees licensure in the state. Vermont requires a bachelor's degree with qualifying accounting coursework. After passing the exam, you complete supervised work experience before applying for your Vermont CPA license through the Board.
How much do certified public accountants make in Vermont?
Certified public accountants in Vermont earn a median of about $78,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,770 for the lowest 10% to over $118,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified public accountants in Vermont?
Companies currently hiring certified public accountants in Vermont include State of Vermont, National Life, and Aon, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Vermont's mix of regional public accounting firms, healthcare institutions, and state government agencies creates consistent demand for CPAs at multiple experience levels.
Which Vermont cities have the most certified public accountant jobs?
The cities with the most certified public accountant openings in Vermont are Burlington, Newport, and Randolph. Burlington drives the largest share of demand as the state's commercial and healthcare hub, home to major employers and a dense cluster of public accounting firms, while Montpelier draws government and nonprofit accounting roles given its status as the state capital.
Are there remote certified public accountant jobs in Vermont?
Yes, and more than most fields, since accounting and tax work is largely document-driven and platform-based. About 33% of certified public accountant openings tied to Vermont are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broad adoption of cloud accounting tools across the profession. Tax preparation, financial reporting, and advisory roles are the most consistently remote, while audit and government positions tend to require more on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a certified public accountant in Vermont with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounting associate or staff accountant role at one of Vermont's regional public accounting firms, such as Gallagher Flynn or Sullivan and Powell, which regularly hire new graduates for rotational positions covering tax and audit. The University of Vermont and Vermont State University also post entry-level finance and accounting coordinator roles that accept candidates still completing their CPA exam requirements. Sitting for the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to QuickBooks or NetSuite strengthens any application.
