Accountant Jobs in Vermont: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accountant in Vermont?
To become a licensed CPA in Vermont, you must meet the education requirements set by the Vermont Board of Public Accountancy, pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam, and complete the required hours of supervised accounting experience. The Board oversees licensure and renewal. For staff or private-industry accountant roles that do not require a CPA, a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and relevant software skills are typically the baseline hiring criteria.
How much do accountants make in Vermont?
Accountants in Vermont earn a median of about $78,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,770 for the lowest 10% to over $118,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire accountants in Vermont?
Companies currently hiring accountants in Vermont include National Life, Aon, and Clara Martin Center, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Vermont's mix of healthcare systems, utilities, state agencies, and higher education institutions means accountant demand is distributed across multiple stable sectors rather than concentrated in a single industry.
Which Vermont cities have the most accountant jobs?
The Vermont cities with the most accountant openings are Burlington, Randolph, and Shelburne. Burlington drives the largest share of demand as Vermont's economic and population center, home to the University of Vermont Medical Center, major financial firms, and a dense cluster of nonprofits, while Montpelier draws consistent openings from state government agencies and Rutland from regional healthcare and manufacturing employers.
Are there remote accountant jobs in Vermont?
Yes, and more than most fields, since accounting is largely desk-based and well suited to remote work. About 30% of accountant openings tied to Vermont are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. Roles in tax preparation, financial reporting, and management accounting tend to be the most commonly offered on a fully remote or flexible basis.
How can I get hired as a accountant in Vermont with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for staff accountant or accounting assistant roles at Vermont's larger institutional employers, including the University of Vermont, the University of Vermont Medical Center, and state agencies, all of which hire new graduates on a recurring basis. Internship programs at regional public accounting firms in Burlington are a strong on-ramp. Completing the CPA Exam sections early or holding a bookkeeping certification signals commitment and gives candidates without experience a clear edge in Vermont's competitive entry-level market.
Where can I find and apply to accountant jobs in Vermont?
You can find and apply to accountant jobs in Vermont on Migrate Mate, which lists current Vermont openings across industries and experience levels. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from the listings.
