Accountant Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accountant in Massachusetts?
To become a licensed CPA in Massachusetts, candidates must meet the education requirements set by the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy, pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, and complete the required hours of supervised accounting experience. Massachusetts also requires an ethics exam. Staff accountant roles without licensure typically require a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and many employers prefer candidates already sitting for the CPA exam.
How much do accountants make in Massachusetts?
Accountants in Massachusetts earn a median of about $99,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,460 for the lowest 10% to over $160,100 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire accountants in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring accountants in Massachusetts right now include Enterprise Mobility, RSM, and Mimecast, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of financial services firms, major hospital networks, and research universities creates particularly consistent demand for accountants across both public and private sectors.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most accountant jobs?
Boston, Worcester, and Woburn have the most accountant openings in Massachusetts. Boston dominates due to its concentration of financial services firms, healthcare systems, and corporate headquarters, while Worcester and Springfield draw demand from regional hospitals, manufacturers, and state agencies that maintain steady accounting teams outside the Greater Boston metro.
Are there remote accountant jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 62% of accountant openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally desk-based and software-driven accounting work is. Roles focused on financial reporting, tax preparation, and management accounting are the most likely to offer fully remote or hybrid arrangements, while positions requiring on-site access to physical records or close collaboration with operations teams tend to remain in-office.
How can I get hired as a accountant in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff accountant or accounting associate role at a public accounting firm or a large Massachusetts employer, where structured onboarding is common for recent graduates. Boston-area firms affiliated with the Big Four and regional firms like Wolf and Company run new-graduate programs specifically for candidates without prior experience. Completing an internship during a degree program, earning an associate CPA certificate, or moving laterally from a bookkeeping or accounts payable role are the most common ways in without a full experience record.
Where can I find and apply to accountant jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to accountant jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current Massachusetts openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
