Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in New York?
The clearest path is enrolling in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program at a New York university and pursuing internships during your sophomore or junior year. While a full Professional Engineer license from the New York State Education Department requires a degree and experience after graduation, many firms look for candidates who have passed or are preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Strong academic standing and relevant coursework in transportation, structural, or environmental engineering are the baseline qualifications most New York employers expect.
How much do civil engineering interns make in New York?
Civil engineering interns in New York earn a median of about $103,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,290 for the lowest 10% to over $169,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in New York?
Employers hiring civil engineering interns in New York right now include City of New York, Michael Baker International, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of large infrastructure and transit projects means engineering consultancies and public agencies tied to the MTA, NYCDOT, and NYSDOT are consistently among the most active recruiters for intern-level talent.
Which New York cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
New York, Manhattan, and Albany have the most civil engineering intern openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its scale of ongoing infrastructure investment and the headquarters presence of major engineering consultancies, while Albany draws interns through state agency work with NYSDOT and DASNY, and Buffalo benefits from regional infrastructure programs and a growing waterfront redevelopment sector.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil engineering intern work is largely hands-on, involving site visits, field measurements, and in-office design reviews that are difficult to perform remotely. About 33% of civil engineering intern openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in analytical or CAD-heavy support tasks rather than project delivery roles.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured intern programs run by public agencies and large consultancies in New York, including NYCDOT's summer intern program and entry-level rotations at firms like AECOM and Jacobs that are designed specifically for students without prior work experience. Completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a portfolio of school projects in AutoCAD or Civil 3D gives candidates a concrete edge. Adjacent roles like engineering technician or CAD drafter at smaller New York firms also provide a practical bridge into full intern or junior engineer positions.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one through the listing.
