INTRODUCTION
The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency and professionalism. The Cranes and Derricks (C&D) unit’s mission is to ensure that crane and hoisting work in New York City is performed safely as per manufacturer recommendations and best industry practices while maintaining the requirements of the NYC Construction Codes.
Responsibilities
Under general supervision and reporting to the Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:
- Assist the Unit’s plan examination team in the review of Suspended Scaffold and simple mobile crane applications filed with the Department of Buildings to ascertain compliance with Building Codes or other related building laws enforced by DOB.
- Prepare lists of objections identified during the initial review of above applications. Discuss those objections with the Unit’s plan examiners.
- Prepare reports as per Unit’s management team.
- Assist the Assistant Chief Plan Examiner or Chief Plan Examiner in the research, data statistics for preparation of Unit’s performance reports.
- Assist the Unit’s Inspection team in the review, organizational & filings of inspection reports.
REMOTE WORK
When working a 35 hour/week schedule, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
WORK HOURS
- Up to 17 hours/week when school is in session
- Up to 35 hours/week during school break
PAY RATE
- Entering Freshmen through completion of Sophomore year: $18.50
- Entering Junior through completion of Senior year: $19.30
- First year graduate level: $20.30
- Second year graduate level and above: $21.90
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
For Assignment Level I: Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Field of Study: Civil engineering, civil engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or mechanical engineering technology. Candidate must possess strong communication skills, be able to read equipment/construction drawings & be knowledgeable in the usage of computer Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
