Mechanical Engineering Intern Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical engineering intern in Maryland?
Most mechanical engineering intern roles in Maryland require active enrollment in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program at a college or university. Maryland does not require a state-issued intern license, but many positions with defense contractors require eligibility for a federal security clearance, so U.S. citizenship is a common prerequisite. Completing relevant coursework in thermodynamics, materials science, and CAD, along with any prior lab or project experience, strengthens an application significantly.
Which companies hire mechanical engineering interns in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring mechanical engineering interns in Maryland include CVS Health, Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates, and Walgreens, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maryland's concentration of aerospace, defense, and federal research institutions means many of the largest recurring employers are government contractors and research laboratories with structured internship programs.
Which Maryland cities have the most mechanical engineering intern jobs?
Baltimore, Frederick, and Columbia are the Maryland cities with the most mechanical engineering intern openings. Baltimore draws demand from its manufacturing base and institutions like Johns Hopkins, while the suburban Washington D.C. corridor in Rockville, Bethesda, and College Park generates openings tied to federal agencies, national laboratories, and the large defense contractors headquartered there.
Are there remote mechanical engineering intern jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they're rare. About 37% of mechanical engineering intern openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most intern work involves hands-on lab testing, hardware assembly, or on-site collaboration with engineering teams. The portions of the role most likely to be done remotely include computational modeling, simulation analysis, and technical documentation tasks.
How can I get hired as a mechanical engineering intern in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to structured undergraduate internship programs at Maryland's large defense and aerospace employers, which are designed for students with limited professional experience. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory all run formal early-career programs for engineering students. Strong academic performance in core coursework, a personal CAD or simulation project portfolio, and eligibility for a security clearance give candidates a meaningful edge over applicants without those qualifiers.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings in one place. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your program, skills, and location, and apply directly to whichever ones fit your situation.
